AG use tax exemption for guns or ammo?

Anybody here get an agricultural use sales tax exemption on guns or ammo for predator control? It came up on a Texas forum, and I thought I'd seek some input from other states.

I was going to start a little side deal with a friend of mine. His brother in law is a tax guy and he said that guns, ammo, fuel, mileage, tags, everything that was related to the "business" would be a right off. But you might want to check with your tax preparer the find out the whole deal. It was him telling me this and me not really paying attention.

In Texas, if you go into a farm and ranch store, buy any type of farm supplies, the clerk will ask you if it's for "farm use", if you qualify (have a working farm), they'll fill out a form and you don't pay sales tax.

Some of these stores sell ammunition. If you use it for predator/varmint control on the farm, is it tax free?

You guys are talking about 2 different things.
Any business expense is always a deduction, although it may have to be prorated over years.
An AG sales tax exclusion is totally different and depends on your states sales tax code.

Here in KS, the AG sales tax exemption is for anything that is used in the production of crops, farming or ranching, or anything that is consumed--, ie. oil, chemicals, etc.

I think you would be hard pressed to defend it if you were ever audited, nor would I bet that the store would allow it, as it is their butt on the line if THEY ever have a sales tax audit.

I am a hunter ed instructor, and I deduct most of my ammunition, powder, even my gun purchases, as charitable deductions, because I use most everything in classes that I teach.

Just my .02!
