Aggressive behavior from a coyote?

I've never had one act aggressive towards me.I've seen a few act aggressive towards theirselves when they got hit with a shotgun though.I've been pretty lucky and had most of the coyotes I shot fall over dead on the spot. The ones that were'nt never snarled or anything.A buddy of mine shot one in the jaw last year and when he went to pick it up it came after him.I did'nt get to see that but I sorta wish I would have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I shot one a few years back. My brother went over to it, and gave it a nudge. Nothing. So, he reached down and grabbed it by the tail. Not only was it not dead, it was not very happy about being shot in the neck either. I think we both squealed like a couple of girls when that thing coiled back on its self with its mouth wide open. I've killed a bunch since then with nothing more than a twitch or two. I'm still very cautious about reaching down to grab them.

I almost hate to tell this story on such an open forum and I didn't tell it to very many people after it happened. I don't want a reputation as a blowhard and try to stick very close to the actual facts. With that being said, I did have a witness to the whole episode.

My dad and I were hunting in late August. We heard some coyotes howl in a long open draw with a rocky ridge along the east side. We circled to get the wind right and Dad set up in the rocks while I went to the bottom of the draw to call. We were hoping that he would get a broadside shot as they came in. I never could find a place I really liked where I could see decent but I went ahead and set up because if I kept moving, I would put Dad out of the action. I crawled up above a cutbank and started the cassette player laying right beside me. I was laying down looking up the draw with the rifle on a bipod.

While I was looking behind me through the binoculars at what I thought was a coyote sitting in the sage brush, I heard something in front of me. I looked around and two coyotes were running full speed at me. One kind of jumped up to look over the grass and the other one got ahead. It was like he caught another gear and they were coming even faster. They were probably 50 yards and closing. I knew I wasn't going to get a shot so I raised up on my knees expecting them to turn and run. They never even slowed a little bit. I stood up because I thought they were going to run right over me. The first one was right in front of me. I was a little panicked by now and fumbled to get the safety off. He was kind of growling or woofing with his ruff standing up. It reminded me of a dog that is getting ready to attack you but is looking for a better angle. I thought he was going to jump on me and I was just thinking I would have to stab the gun barrel at him to knock him away. He was bouncing past me on my left when I got the safety off. I just shoved the gun barrel at him and shot. He fell off the cutbank behind me. I turned back to face the second on and it was kind of crouched down facing me from about 10 feet. I short stroked the bolt and the empty fell back on top of the other shells. By the time, I pulled the empty out, the coyote took off. Dad and I both smoked it up as it ran away. I thought I hit it once but dont' know for sure. The dead one was a big dog and it was 6 feet to the blood that blew out the off side of him when I shot him. He was probably only two or three feet from my rifle barrel.

Dad said that when he saw them coming, he never did have a decent shot but watched the whole thing happen. Even with him as a witness, I was hesitant to tell the story except to people who I knew that would believe me.

I suppose my credibility shot on this site now.

ive had coyotes act agressive in traps, growl, howl, snarl& bear teeth & coyotes growl & yelp cause they got to close while i was calling when they realized oh! crap that rabbits freakin huge, but the most agressive coyote ive delt with was a female inside a den, i killed the male near a den id found & the female was inside, unbeknown to me, i was crawling inside to retrieve the pups & i had to yell & throw dirt in her face as i backed out, she got within inches of my face, luckily i had a 22mag pistol with me so i crawled back inside pistol drawn this time & shot her when she came at me again, she had 5 pups in that den with her, this took place around the 1st week of July a couple years back while doing a damage complaint on a cattle farm, the farm manager located the den when he was checking cows & his aussie dog got to close to the den & was attacked the coyotes didnt even pay attention to his yelling they were set on driving away the other canine from their den site.

drhart,
Like the other accounts of encounters with coyotes, each one has their own merits and there's something to be learned from all of them. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif No loss of crdibility here.

I'd say that there are 2 things that could account for more "aggressive" or "brave" behavior from coyotes in the west and that would be their lack of exposure to humans...compared to east of the Mississippi and the other thing is competition among the coyotes themselves.

I've had guys that were turkey hunting and using turkey decoys, while calling (hen yelps), have had a pair coyotes run up and one of them grab a decoy and run off. Ofcourse after a short run they'd drop it, when they realized that they'd picked up something that wasn't alive. The point I'm making with this comparison is that when a pair of coyotes are coming in to a decoy, it's a race to see who gets there first and gets the prize. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Everyone has had some very good information on the accounts with coyotes. Very interesting. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Good hunting, Bowhunter57

I don't think so. You can't predict what these wild animals will do.

I have had a few try to bite me when walking up on them after shooting them and one that came at me when i was running up on it after shooting him but my 223 was faster. And alot that have followed us after doing a stand not saying that they were being aggressive but possibly just interested. When my dad was able to get access and call some coyotes that were being studied with the reseachers they found out that after doing a stand and getting back in the truck and driving a coyote that had come in and gotten down wind was following them for like 3 miles or somthing like that. They were able to find this out because of the gps collars the coyotes had on them. So if they follow you I think its just because they are interested.
