Air rifle

How loud are air rifles that shoot ~1200 fps? Could the crack possibly be confused with a firearm, say 22lr? I've surprisingly never shot an air rifle other than a spring powered daisy. I'm also looking at getting one in .25 caliber that shoots subsonic as well. Thanks.

I have a Beeman 1047 Dual Caliber. .22 & .177....I live right in town and shoot quite a bit. Not as loud as a .22lr. Sounds like a screen door slamming shut. There are no tree rats dropping green pinecones on our cars anymore.

Power,

How do you like your Beeman? I think they are highly recommended on rimfirecentral. I hated my Gammo - sold it, now looking for a replacement. I want something as quiet as possible. Have several tree rats that need to meet their maker.

I started a thread on air rifles and most said for the money the benjamin marauder was a good one.I think after the Christmas bust is over I may get one.Might want to look into that one.

You cannot!!!

You cannot even own a suppressor without a tax stamp, cuz no one will transfer it to you - and if you make it, you get double jeopardy - for possession without a stamp, and manufacturing without a license. Those two could really ruin the next 20 years of your life.

If you doubt me, call the ATF.

Jack... where do you get this crap???

I got it from some air rifle people, but, never actually verified it.
Some manufacturers of high powered air rifles are advertising that you can use a suppressor without a tax stamp, but maybe they give it a different name?

They are either quoting European advertising (they are legal and about $25 in most European countries), or they are talking about suppressors that are built into the barrel as one piece - and that is VERY shaky ground. You will have to defend it in court... something the individual CANNOT AFFORD!!

There is already established case law that goes against suppressing airguns in the USA.

I would say that the Beeman is ok. The .177 is more accurate than the .22......I get 1000FPS with the .177 and about 900FPS with the .22.....both have taken many a tree rat but if its a longer shot or if the shot calls for a head shot (like thats all I can see) I would rather use the .177....Right now the .177 bbl is on the air rifle and I dont see myself changing to the .22.....I will not buy another one. I would rather spend an extra $100 or more to get a better quality Air Rifle.

the silencer law for air guns is a very taboo topic even in the air gun world. You can buy them with out a tax stamp people name the LDC's (lead dust collectors), air strippers, etc. Some company's sell air guns with shrouds it fully encloses the barrel with small holes placed on it, it does lower the report. Even though it can be counted as a suppressor it's also a integral or structural part of the gun. You can buy them and some that are made are very nice ! But choose the side of caution with them.

If your a plinker get a springer, beeman and benjamien tend to be good value.

PcP is higher end and maurder is the best value for money with a cult following endless supply of mods for them. However you need a pump such a the pump they sell etc, or a scuba tank.

Got any info to expound on that with?

Looks like the airgun silencer "grey area" ain't so grey anymore. Airgun-specific silencers appear to be quite legal.

United States Court of Appeals, First Circuit

A reversal of a poorly prepared case does NOT make suppressors legal.

It is VERY shaky ground, and the cost of defending yourself is astronomical.

Air rifles wont do good above 1000 fps, there are some Pcps that can do above that but they are design to shoot heavier pellets. Ldcs are legal on most states but they must be non removable or permanent attached.

If you want power you can take a look at some korean rifles as Eujines, Carreers or Evanix, another option would be AF condor. They are not as nice or accurate as the high end guns but they sure can hunt...

I agree.

I'll personally stick with shrouded air rifles in .25 if I'm looking for quiet. You can do a whole lot with a 60fpe .25 air rifle......and a whole lot more with a 120fpe .25 air rifle.

I'm interested in seeing the established case law against airgun "silencers" you mentioned.
