Alaska Cruise

There's lots of pics, slideshow, it starts when you can read the name of the boat, so next time you see that you've gone all the way around...

Cruise Pictures

The pictures go backwards chronologically, so it goes Victoria BC, then Skagway, Then Juneau, then Tracy Arm, then Ketchikan, then Seattle.

If you're thinking about doing this run, feel free to ask questions!

I have thought about such a cruise. But don't you need some arm-candy to complete the ensemble? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Well, it doesn't hurt, I'll tell ya that, NASA! I mean, it's not like a hunting trip! Sometimes it lends itself to that kind of... atmosphere!

Oh yeah. And that would be the kind of atmosphere to get into. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

Were you able to get up to see the glaciers receeding from the onslaught of "Global Warming"? If not, don't worry. They've been receeding for the last 6,000 years.

Boy that beings back some memories. The wife and I took that Cruise in 1975 coming back from Alaska. Very nice pictures, Thank you for sharing. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif GENE'O

NASA, we saw the Sawyer Glacier in Tracy Arm, then went to the Mendenhall in Juneau.

I agree, it aggravates me that the greenies turn flips over irregularities in 120 years of recorded climate cycles.

Then they pick out of context information to get the ignorant city dwellers all up in arms with them.

For instance, "The glaciers hold 85% of the earth's fresh water supply..." The ignorant urbanites run in circles screaming, "Oh no, we're running out of fresh water!!!" Ummmm....what about evaporation, condensation, and precipitation? What was that, 3rd grade?!?!

Gene'o, It's neat country... that inside water. I've been many times, this was the first time in a floating resort. I enjoy it every time.

Steve, any more pics of the trip you'd like to share? Were you able to hike around any of the icefields? How was the on board food? All you can eat lobster?

Awesome pic's very nice.

So did you get much fishing done of the big boat?

I would have the gonads to take my kid’s on a trip like that. they would be trying to jump in the water every time I would turn around /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif . I tell my wife the Mail man must love to swim because I can't stand to swim it unless it is a warm beach with all I can drink margaritas(sp)

Thanks for sharing that with all of us very nice.

I have another camera to get pics off of, but I think it's the same subject matter, except we did do the draft horse carriage ride in Victoria, and that's on the other camera.

We never got out on the ice, only the helicopter tours got onto the ice. (Probably just to make the helicopter tours sell out. Not like there's any laws or anything.) Got to touch and feel an iceburg in Mendenhall Lake, my sons enjoyed that. (Although they enjoyed touching the dead salmon there too! Boys all the way through, those 2!)

We hit one pretty hard with the ship, that was kinda cool. It's something to feel a 900 foot ship bump and shudder like that!

The food is very good. Not quite gourmet, but close. Eat 24-7 if you want to, and move from venue to venue. The menu changes every few hours. Only got lobster one night, but it was yummy. Only gaind 4 pounds... I was proud of myself for eating 7 meals a day!

Didn't fish, especially not off the big boat, the landing net was too big to pack! I've fished Southeast alot in the past, and this trip was mostly for my wife (dress up, shows, music, cocktail parties, etc.) and my Father-in-Law, who's a birder and photographer. Still had fun, but would have enjoyed tying into those 20" Cutts again!

I was careful about the boys around the rails. I've grown up on the ocean, but it still freaks me out carrying the son along a railing that's 14 stories off the water! I made them walk and held their hand. Paranoid, yes, but that's a fatal fall. Just didn't like thinking about it! The boat was really good about being kid-proof on the railings. I never found a spot where they could have forced themselves thru the railings.

Fun trip.

Nice pics rainshadow1 looks like you had a relaxing time. We too just came back from a cruise. Of course we did not have the view you did but I bet we were warmer. How many nights for that cruise? We went on the Baja cruise 5 nights and we were just talking last night about going to Alaska on our next cruise. So any info. would be great. Things to do or not to do or maybe a diferent ship, anything you think would be good info. Please just pm the details if you like. Thanks

kapac, if you haven't seen Southeast, you need to. Like I said, I have many times, but I still enjoy it every time.

Sunday to Sunday on this one.

We've only ever done Princess. Twice. I like them. Can't compare, but I do recommend.

My only suggestion is to budget the shore excursions into the trip. You're only in town for 6 to 10 hours, and they know their way around, just do it! Don't try to self-guide. Plop down the money, and pick out your tours.

Oh, a trick we learned... We had the money in the play fund last Spring, and that's when my wife called up and booked it. (It had been over 2 years since out last big trip.) Then she called every month or so and asked if they had any specials. When they did, she said we already had bookings and asked if she could get the better rate. Twice they sent us refunds! Saved about 400 bucks!

A paddle boat trip on the inside passage is a nice trip also. With only a couple hundred people it is cozier. Plus the paddle boat can go places the big ships can't.

Jack

That's true, Jack. My folks lived in Wrangell for a couple summers, fishing the (commercial) dungeness crab seasons. There were several small cruise ships that came there, and Petersburg, and several other towns (and waterways) that the big ships couldn't get to. A better tour, more expensive most of the time.

When I got married 2years ago me and the wife went on a cruise thru the carribean. The ship are nice with way way way to much food thats need to be ate at different times of the night.LOL I think I gained about 12 pounds in 2 weeks.I also remembered the drink of the day man that was fun.If ya'll ever get a chance stop off in cazumel and take a taxi ride that was a highlight of that little place.he was running about 90mph down little pig trails.the wife was trying to climb in the floor board and i was laffing telling him to drive faster and it only costed 12 bucks lol.

But yes cruise shipps are a blast.everyone should atleast take one.

i might have missed it but what cruise line did ya'll go out on? I know we get discount stuff all the time from carnavel since we went. Some good deals after the first one.

Nice pics Steve. They only thing wrong with them is ya didn't get a chance to get in many with the family, and by the way nice look'n family ya have there. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I need to stop taking for granite whats under my own nose and get out and enjoy some of that stuff.

Heck the Iditarod runs right by my I hous and I yet to get out there and watch the mushers go by. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Big D, it was Princess. We had traveled Princess in the Carribean several years ago, so they gave us a good deal. Then like I said, my wife wrangled two more price reductions.

A Y , My father in law has several of all of us, I asked him to e-mail a couple where I don't look too stupid compared to my beautiful wife and kids! I'll post them. I was able to stand on the ice of the Chena River in Fairbanks and take pictures of the winner of the other race (whatever it was called) back in '97. That was kinda fun. Big party atmosphere. (Then Seattle Filmworks lost my photos!) You have to prepare for Alaska, but if you do, the opportunities are limitless.

NASA, that's exactly right. It's about a 15 foot snow blower from the White Pass line.

Here's a few with me in them...
