Alaska shotgun?

thanks for the replies i will warn them about the large beers that roam the woods up there.Does the rem 870 come in a SS model with 18 inch barrel. They are thinking of getting one in the lower 48 and taking it up with them[. Should them just purchase one up there. I think they fly into Juneau Alaska any sporting good stores I could recommend to them

Two.58 caliber lead balls connected by a 4"braided steel cable.

Also known as BOLO round and BRUSHCUTTER round

Very effective home invasion product.

Might not do the trick at a 50yrds, but for 25yrds or less, You would have to imagine that it would do a lot of damage.

Especially if you aimed a little low!!!

I would look into a Rossi Ranch Hand in 45 Colt or 44 Mag. If I were spending time around Alaska... IF I didn't know how to shoot a handgun functionally. They are easier to carry around than a bulky shotgun for hiking and such, hold 6 rounds and pack enough punch at 50 yds to give anything in North American a bad day. I would recommend a handgun if thats an option for you though. Easier carry/concealment and you can get some pretty devastating loads like 454 Cas, 460 Rug, or 500 S&W.

I'm positive it would be right up there with 22lr, 17hmr and slingshots shooting arrows.

We loaded all slugs with one round of OO buck in the chamber. The idea was to spray the bear in the face with the buckshot to motivate it to turn around. If it didn't, pump it full of slugs. Aim for the shoulders, if they cant use their legs they can't come after you.

One of 3 things can happen with those pesky bears.
You or the bear go your separate ways.
The bear approaches but you scare it off with a warning shot.
The bear ignores the warning shot and comes in for the kill.
Screw the shotgun!I'll take a .338 Win mag thank you.

Quote:Should them just purchase one up there.....If they have lots of excess money, buy it there since most supplies are about 3x what they cost in the lower 48...However, if money is an factor, buy it here and take it with you, sell it there before coming back...

Repeat hit it on the head. 1895 Marlin not 336 in .45-70 or .450 which will also chamber and safely shoot the .45-70. I have seen one sow grizzly killed in Alaska charging hunters. It was killed by the guide using a Remington 870 12ga. It was not stainless or the marine model. He was using buckshot and the distance was seventeen feet. Many other Alaskan guides carry the 870 and the .45-70 Marlin, Browning or Winchester. As for the .500S&W, the average handgun shooter cannot control the recoil. Controlled effective shot placement. As for whatever is chosen it must be proven reliable reguardless of make or model and you or them in this case must know basic field repairs and cleaning reguardless of the firearms' material make-up.

Having lived in Alaska for 7+ years a good quality PUMP shotgun loaded with Brenneke dangerous game slugs will work In Kodiak we carried 14" Rem870 loaded with Sabot slugs. Never aim at the head as the round will skip off his head you try and break its shoulders so it cant come at you as fast then take the death shot.

Exactly, get one in the big part of the upper half and then position yourself for the kill shot. No head shots, you want to seat them ASAP and then give them one where it counts. It will take at least 2+ shots, period.
