Alaskan Moose Hunt, Wanna go?

My latest dream for Alaska is a moose hunt. I have been there 3 times so far, and can't wait to go back. Once on a fly fishing trip, once for caribou and once for black bear. All were great adventures and were very successful.

My question to the members here is, would any of you be interested in going on a moose hunt with me in the fall of 2004? I had planned to go last year and this year. For various reasons, I have been unable to make it a reality. Pretty much, all the planning has been done. The costs for a 2 week trip would be approximately $5000.00. I have planned a self-guided float trip for moose. Don't let a float trip scare you off. The river we would be on would be calm and slow moving and no problem for first timers. Most moose would be taken near the river, making the hard parts much easier. It is sure to be a wonderful adventure.

I am not asking for solid commitments, just trying to see if there might be any interest. I am looking for 3 people who would like to go to Alaska with me. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here, or e-mail me. I love to talk about Alaska.

Thanks,
Paul

I am asuming the $5,000.00 will be split 4 ways? Let us in on the details. I like to talk Alaska too. Have you considered the Kobuk? More expensive to get there but what a blast. I worked up there for a few years. Two years ago I shot five bou and a nice moose. Mid Sep. is the best time up there. I have good connections in a few of the villiages.

Hi guys,
The $5000 would be per person for those flying in from the lower 48. That amount should be all inclusive. With that amount, I was planning on hunting the Hog river. Air taxi on and off that river is approx. $2475 per person out of Bettles.

The Kobuk is also an option. Air taxi is less. I would probably want to start on the Reed River and float down to the Kobuk. Takeout would be in the town of Kobuk.

If someone in the party had a raft or two, it could greatly reduce the cost. Raft rental is about $90 per day per raft.

The main reason I like the Hog is that I have talked with someone who has hunted there. Access is tough so hunting pressure is much less. Usually you have to portage from the drop-off point to the river about 1/4 mile. There are good populations of moose and they are supposed to be huge. The guy I talked to saw 15 moose and shot the smallest one he saw. It was 61" wide. Not too bad.

I would be open to suggestions. Non-res costs would be higher than for residents. License, tags, airfare, shipping trophies and meat, motel, rental car. Hunting the Reed and Kobuk would probably cut nearly $1000 from the costs.

AW, where on the Kenai? I've been to Soldotna on a fishing trip. Did fly-outs out of Kenai.

ps. The black bear population is supposed pretty good on the Hog. Odds of taking a blackie should be pretty good. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Ilive in Anchor Point, just south of Soldotna. I have a friend in Kiana on the kobuk that has an air taxi hr has two Cherokee sixes a cesna 185 (I think) and a super Cub. I also know a guy in Nelchina with a Cub. I have been wanting to do a hunt out in the boonies for quite a while. I can't commit to anything yet but I'll definitely give it some thought.

Alaskan Wolfer,
Like I said, I would be open to any suggestions. How much would your friend charge to fly us around? I'll have to get my map out to see where Kiana is.

Anyone else interested in a moose hunt? All options are open. Let's hear what you have to say. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Moose 57,
Kiana is on the Kobuk and is located right below the confluence of the Kobuk and Squirrel rivers. I have hunted both rivers. There are gobbs of carribou and plenty of big moose. I just got off the phone with my friend and he charges 400.00/hour. If you are interested and know how to drive dump truck or run loader he said we can work out trade deal. I am currently trying to get in touch with another guy that I know who might rent us a boat. this would eliminate the need to charter a plane.
Just up river from Kiana (between Kiana and Ambler) is one of the largest carribou crossings on the river. I watched them cross for ten hours one day non stop. On that same stretch of river, I seen several moose in the sixty inch plus range. Since I was working up there I didn't have time to hunt that area. That is why I was thinking about that area. AW

Alaskan Wolfer,
I can run a loader, drive a truck, run a backhoe, excavator, bulldozer, crane. I'm a general contractor. I've run a bunch of equipment over the years. I'm not sure how a trade would work, but I'm game.

It sounds like a great area. What's it cost to get to Kiana? Do you fly into Kotzebue first and then to Kiana? Probably would be best for me to fly from Anchorage to Kotzebue. That would be cool too if we could get a boat to motor all over the river.

The possibilities are endless.

I live and dream moose. My favorite big game animal to hunt. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif I'd be interested in doing something like this. Count me in!

Alaskan Wolfer,

Do you know much about Kalgin Island and the moose there? Have you done any hunting on that island? I was thinking of giving that island a shot this year with Natron Air if I don't get a antlerless drawing permit around my place.

Lots of luck to you guys on your hunt. I'm too worn out to chase old Bullwinkle anymore. You never know what work is until you get one. My first kill was about half a mile in from the river. My hunting companion got sick, couldn't make the trip so I was alone. It damn near killed me.
I swore I'd never do it again and haven't, but it was the best trip of my life. Have fun.

Coyote Hunter,
Kalgin is loaded with moose. I have never hunted the island but the buls that I have seen there seem to be fairly small. I have had other guys tell me the same thing. If you are planning on hunting early in the season, check with some of the charter operators for a drop off and pick up. This may or may not save you a few bucks. AW
