Almost Every .17hmr has a HEAVY barrel, why?

I have never seen a "pencil" barrel at a benchrest match. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Prolly ain't seen many hummers there, either.......

Lot's of 22 rimfires with bull barrels. The match shooters will "prolly" switch to "pencil" barrels after getting your expert advice.

Part fad, part what is needed for the shooting discipline, part what the person likes, and $$ profit margin.

Sam that is one nice rifle and I would like to have one similar, but also would like to have one in the sporter type barrel for carrying around. Something for all to consider that a standard mass produced barrel might not be any more accurate than a sporter weight.

Almost Every .17hmr has a HEAVY barrel so that when you shoot a coyote with one.....and the coyote predictably doesn't die quickly...you have the biggest and heaviest club possible in your hands to beat the coyote to death with...

A heavy barrel isn't always more accurate, but they hit proportionately harder when swung really fast.

WHACK......YELP....!

My apologies to MCWALK... I didn't see your post before I posted. But, if anything, maybe it shows "great minds think alike"...

Bayou City Boy,I thought I was the lone ranger their for awhile...I will tell you right now,I have a 17 hmr and it is definitely money wasted!!!Dont want to start another big debate about the 17 hmr but it is useless for the type hunting that I do.The only reason I havent found it a new home is because I have got a 6 year old son that might want to shoot black birds with it...and oh yea-great minds,Ilike that..

OKRattler,I tried the 17 hmr on several fox and it got to the point to where I was haveing to take my mag light out of my pocket and smack the foxes across the head to finish the job.Now I dont worry about that because I got me a CZ 527 in 17 rem. The 17hmr is no doubt a great praire dog rifle but in my opinion it does'nt belong in the predator world...

I have the Marlin heavy bbl. 17HMR and I love it. However I have one problem with the heavy bbl. When I'm just walking and carrying it over my shoulder with a sling, it is that front heavy that it just keeps going back over my shoulder wanted to go barrel down. I quit fighting it now and just carry it barrel down.

MCWALK-Agreed.Although I have shot one coyote (before I knew better) and one badger with mine and my brother shot and killed a badger with his too.I would have to say a badger is about the biggest critter I would expect this caliber to kill consistantly. With headshots only of course which is alright because on badgers thats about all you ever get anyway. Not sure about foxes I havent got a shot at one yet.Maybe someday though.
