Well I went out calling yesterday and called in a small yote, but it hung up behind a row of small tress so I took a shot at it but missed. Right after I shot, I heard this animal running towards me! I though it might be another yote that I couldnt see. So I get the rifle back up and wait for it to come. I was sitting in some tall grass and there was a dip in the terain right infront of me so I couldnt see too far ahead. I waited with the cross hairs right ahead of me and here a little black creature apears 15 feet in front of me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif wait a second, that aint a coyote like I though it was! It was a frickin skunk running right to me /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif . So I jumped up and ran ahead, cause the bush was too thick behind me, and I went to the right, the skunk went to the right! So I went to the left, the damn skunk went to the left! At this point I was paniking so I raised the rifle and took a shot at him, and missed but he took off to the right and I ran away as fast as I could! he was about 6 feet away the whole time too! I went back to the truck to go home only to remeber I forgot my shooting sticks were the skunk was, needless to say I left them there! I wish I had a video camera! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

LOL the same thing happened to me about 2 months ago. The skunk just kept getting closer and closer. When he was 5 foot from me I stood up and ran the other way!! I left all my gear behind including my gun. My wife was laughing SOOO hard at me for leaving my gun behind....but she did not take the time to grab it either =)

LAST DAY OF FOX SEASON OF 2004 I HAD A NICE LITTLE VISIT AROUND 10:30 AT NIGHT AFTER MY CALLER QUIT WORKING. I JUST WATCHED A RED FOX TROT OFF WITHOUT GETTING A SHOT BEING MY CALLER QUIT FOR THE SECOND TIME(THIS ISSUE IS NOW RESOLVED). I HEARD SOMETHING COMMING AND HIT MY VAMINT LIGHT. HEAR IT WAS A NICE BIG SKUNK ABOUT 10 FEET BELOW MY TREE STAND. NAILED HIM WITH TRIPPLE BBB TOUNGSTEN IRON AND NOT APPRARENTLY GOOD ENOUGH BECAUSE HE SPRAYED SO HARD AFTER NAILING HIM I COULDNT BREATH. I DONT KNOW IF ITS SPRAY HAD BACTERA IN IT OR IF I WAS RUN DOWN BUT ENDED UP WITH A TERRIBLE FLU FOR OVER A WEEK. YOU CAN STILL SMELL IT ON MY CAMO TODAY!!! NEXT TIME I'LL LET EM WALK BY. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smiliesmack.gif

I see skunks pretty often in some of the areas I hunt, found myself within 4 or 5 ft of one before I saw it last weekend. My experience has been that they are not aggressive at all, just don't do anything sudden to startle them and walk away. They always let me go though sometimes follow a little way, just to make sure I know they call the shots. I haven't been sprayed yet. I believe they always spray if shot in the head or spine. BTW the chemical that makes them so vile is nu-butyl mercaptan sulphate, more commonly just called mercaptan.

I dusted a skunk a few years back... he came in to a Haydel's GCH. About five minuets into the set... PoP! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Their he was in some high grass, right in front of me and my sidekick... he had a 12ga and just looked at me like "... you want ME to shot?" I just shook my head NO and the little black and white pest started to get wise and took off. I let him get about a hundred yards out and smoked him. There was a nice mist hanging above him for a few minutes. My buddy asked me later why I shot him... after I told him how many turkey eggs they eat he wanted to go skunk hunting! Funny thing was, we had never seen a skunk on that property. After that day I have killed at least one skunk a month for over a year... our turkey population has doubled in the past couple of years!

My wife (before we got married) had a place that was in a "skunk alley". A lot of homes in the area too.

She had never killed a living thing bigger than a bug but was getting so fed up with skunk visits that she dusted off her newly bought Police 870 Rem 12 ga.

I set up a bait in her yard with cat food against a big english walnut tree and hung a trouble light overhead and powered it with an extension cord that she controlled from her deck.

One night a short time later, when we were talking on the phone, she informed me that she "had a skunk". About 20 minutes later she called me back and informed me that she had gotten TWO SKUNKS!

................ WITH ONE SHOT!!

................. AND NIETHER OF THEM SPRAYED!!!!!

Man!!! I was impressed!!!!

The next evening that I visited ........... I stopped at her mail box and waved real big! I also watched for that 'ole slide action 12 ga. If she had it on the porch, I left!!

Just kidding!

Needless to say, I don't ever want to get her "goat"!

I new I had a hand in creating a "monster" the day we out on our ranch together and she spotted a big bunch of crows on the ground with in shotgun range and her comment was "I wonder how many I could get with one shot"?

Any attacking skunks around here and I just step to one side and let "Ann" (her real middle name) get'em!!!
