Alternative food for Coyotes

Well I guess you would have to call me a farmer and rancher. Anyway, in our neck of the woods, the cactus blooms have a pretty yellow flower, and make a bulb about as big as your thumb. Inside the bulb is a red solution with seeds. I have found that the only way to get into them is with a pair of pliers and a sharp knife. At the right time of year a yote's feces is red from eating these bulbs. Now you tell me how he does this? I know ---- very carefully!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif Like mating porcupines. Also the yotes feces is purple when the night shade berries are ripe.

As a friend of mine always says, "a coyote never met a meal it didn't like", sounds as if it's right on the money.

BUT!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Here in the northeast during the winter, coyotes seem to avoid carrion thats frozen. Many a time in late January I am out hunting, and find a dead deer, and it won't be touched. There are tracks all around it, but the carcass remains untouched by the coyotes. I find this to be true in remote areas also, so I wouldn't expect an alternate easy food source to be near by. Birds and other little nibblers end up feasting on it, then it just rots into the ground come spring.

Maybe the coyotes are feeding on the "little nibblers"????

Add grasshoppers to the list of C. latrans alternate snackstuffs, from the undigested hind leg shells I've found in their scats in Big Sur.

Having watched yotes hunt, it isn't that surprising, maybe. They seem to enjoy the stalk and the pounce and the thrill of the chase... and if that's all there was to hunt on any given day, why the heck not?

james,
No hurt feelings at all. Mouth and brain were in a race. Mouth won. Some would say that if I'm talkin', there ain't nothin' but s*it coming out anyway. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif But... I'm not so willing to laugh at myself that I'm willing to hang my "stupid" sign out there forever. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Thank God for the edit button, once in a while. Bet I don't make that mistake again.
