I've had a cmp Garand for about 15 years. Fun and interesting rifle, we've discussed those before.
My recent acquisition is a beautiful high number 03 with a scant stock and rebarreled with a new 1942 vintage barrel. My uncle, who's getting up there in years, built it at some point in the last 30 years, and wanted to gift it to me. We hunted together a fair amount when I was a teen. I was thrilled to get it, an 03 has been on my "short" list for quite some time and I'd never find as nice a one as this, plus this one has tremendous personal value to me and will be passed on someday.
It shoots well, and I loaded up a good amount of light loads using Tite Group and a 150 fmj for gallery loads anyone can shoot. The Garand and 03 were something many wanted to try out at our July 4th shooting party this year.

You'll enjoy the Springfield, Russ, especially since it was your uncles rifle. You can duplicate the M2 ball load using 150 gr. Sierras and 47 gr. of H4895. Wish I had a nickel for every one of those I fired in both M1's and 1903's.
In the early '50s the market was flooded with 98 Mausers and 03's so they very reasonably priced and were used to build lots of sporter rifles.

Top is a 1903 in a C stock, shot the 2nd, a Sprinfield 03A3, in the 1903 eighty year commemorative match at Tx state match in '83. Was quite a sight seeing 50 "as issued" 03's and A3's on the firing line at one time. Bottom is Smith Corona A3.
