j,
The radio shack mini amp works just fine for a lot of us. I am going to move this topic to electronic calls forum where you should get a few more answers. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

The only issues with the Radio Shack mini-amp stem from people turning the volume too high on it.

It only needs to be turned-up a little bit from the ON postion and thats it. What I do, is I take my Thumbnail and rest in a notch on the wheel, (very very back of it) and then leave it in place in the wheel, and rotate the wheel to ON, keeping thumb in same spot on the wheel, and then only turn the volume as high as my thumb planted on it will allow. THATS ALL YOU NEED.

OR:

Take you Source Unit (MP3, DICC, TAPE) and put it at 80% volume, now turn on the mini-amp just a tad with the volume to get to loud. You want to use the high volume of your source feeding the amp, not the amp alone.

J-Rod,
If you are not getting the sound quality you think you should be getting you might want to upgrade your player.

I went and bought an inexpensive tape player when I first put my e-caller together.I couldn't get the sound quality I thought I should have been getting so I upgraded to a Sony player.and that fixed the poor sound problem.

And What Robb said about using your players volume at 80% or above then fine tuning the sound with the power controle of the RS amp works much better.

Note: if you leave your amp on and player off it will not kill your battery either.I left my amp on accidently for 3 days ans was able to call the whole day without having to change batteries.(but I wouldn't recomend leaving it on the batteries will eventually wear down.)
Another tip if you can find an industrial grade 9 volt battery I would put it in there and use it. They last almost for ever!

Just my .02 cents worth.

Try this link. I bought one of his 7 watt mono amps for $10. I like how it works. I have had no trouble with the RS amp, except when I tried to turn it up too loud, just like has been stated earlier. The DC amp is a nice little unit tho' I believe I get better quality sounds from it. Just MHO, Steve

FYI----

these amps are designed Designed to operate at +12 to +15 Volts DC

The Gentleman at DC Kits stated to me that this amp will run on 9 volts +. I have used a 9 volt and a 8xAA battery pack and it works fine with either. Steve

I was wondering how you hook an amp up to a caller? I have no idea what the Radio Shack amp even looks like, but would like to add one to my caller if it will increase the volume a bit. I have a burnham bros tape player. Are the amps internal or external? Do i need an electronics degree to hook it up? or can any joe shmoe do it?
Thanks,
Nigel.

The Mini Amp really isnt going to help you in that kind of situation. Your Burnham unit has an internal amplifier and the the mini amp wont ADD to it, it would just replace it.

The mini amp is really designed for connecting to a low output source (like a headphone jack) and then giving you the power to run a horn speaker
