Well here is the short version:

I had the oppurtunity to buy this rifle from a family friend awhile ago. He was the original owner and he keeps his guns in great condition. Well another friend of mine really wanted it so I sold it to him with option of first refusal if he ever wanted to get rid of it. To make a long story short it made it back to my place. I know some of you may not really care for this basic Winchester and to be honost with you I do not really know what made me want it(again). This gun shoots GREAT and I really like the wood on this rifle that I would rate at 95%. The serial number dates to 1958. I just thought I would share the story and some pics of this Winchester Model 670 in 30-06.

With beautiful wood like that rifle has, I would have bought it back in a heart beat.

I would too, the wood is beautiful. If you decide you don't want it, I know of a good home /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

I hate to break it to you Hitman but the 670 was not made in 1958...Not trying to be smart a$$ just relaying the facts. I think it came out in 1966 or 67. In 58 they were still making the Mod. 70. The 670 is the cheaper version of the Mod 70. Just for your info.

I too have a model 670 Win in 30.06 that my Dad used for deer hunting. Beat up a little more than your gun. When my Dad passed away I inherited and have used it since. This last year I took the opportunity to bed the action and do some trigger adjustment and it really made all the difference in the world with the gun from an accuracy standpoint. I know it's the cheaper version of the model 70 but I don't think that I will ever part with it. Shoots great, reliable and dependable with great memories; what more could you ask for. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

"peterjc" don't worry about hurting my feelings. I am always looking for more info on guns. I know it is the cheaper version of the Model 70 and I know when the 670 was supposed to have been made. Now correct me if I am wrong weren't these put together using the Model 70 action? Is it possible this is a Pre-64 action on this gun? I have not been able to find much out about these Model 670's. I am hoping to try and get a factory letter for it if I can and I hope to find more out about this gun. Some guys have told me that they put these stocks on 670's from the custom shop but I have not been able to verify that either. Like I said in the post I know it's just a basic rifle but it's history has been hard to find.

For a cheaper version that wood is fantastic it looks like real maple fiddleback with a few birds eyes in it. they do not make stocks like that any more or build guns like that any more.

For anything made in the 60s or 70s it is real easy to tell if it is pre 64. Pre 64 is controlled feed, 64 and later is push feed. The last 15 years or so is more complicated because both styles have been produced. Even in the 60s and 70s there may have been some exceptions on the very high end models but not on normal production.

It doesn't look like a claw extractor of a pre 64' Winchester in the pics. If there isn't a claw extractor, then it is a push feed action and definately post 64'. I was pretty sure by memory the 670 was not offered in the 50's or very early 60's.

Hitman.
The 670 was not built on the Pre 64 mod 70 actions. Like some of the other guys said, the pre 64 models had the claw extractor among other things. The 670 has the button in the bolt face that puts pressure on the empty case on the left side of the case. As you extract the empty the case has tension to right side of the chamber until it clears the port hole and then is thrown out. Also the safety on the 670 is a cheap one that just pushes forward and back kinda like a Rem 700 but is a cheap stamped part. The mod 70 has that safety that turns down like a little handle. The mod 70 (Pre64) has a slot in the bolt where a fixed flat ejector slides thru until it hits the back of the case on the left side and throws out the empty.
670's are nice guns, I hope you didn't think I was trying to belittle your gun. They shoot nice, they just cut some corners when they made them to sell cheaper thats all. Good luck with it.
