Anaconda, Montana Bear Hunting?

I grew up in Libby, MT and after being away 20 years, just moved to Anaconda. It looks like a bear hunt might be my only real option for a big game hunt this fall. Are there any bear/predator hunters from this area? Are there enough bears in the Anaconda area to justify the cost of a non-resident license?

Former Butte Boy here. Used to do all my hunting in the Pintlers. Most of the bears I ran across were up by Georgetown Lake. Garbage bears /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif Also a few down Rock Crick

If I was back in MT and wanted a bear I would head up to Nine Mile West of Missoula. Spent a summer doing exploration work, 20 miles up the drainage, saw 17 different bears that summer (different color phases, sizes, markings saw 7 in one day. One was a bruiser for sure, just not in season!

Been a few years but it might be worth a ride to check things out. There used to be a great steak joint Nine Mile House I believe right off the exit.

Good luck and yes I am jealous you got to move back to MT

Thanks for the info Duncan! I'll have to look into Nine Mile. With bear season being so long I might be able to run back up to the Libby area for a weekend or two also. The majority of the hunting I do is backpack/bivy hunting, so I'm excited to have the Pintler Wilderness nearby.

I was gonna say the same thing, Rock Creek, Moose creek are both excellent bear spots in the pintlers.

Good information guys i think we should keep this thread alive.

2Toms, more than likely I'll be using my Contender in .45-70. If I have an opportunity for a shot under 75 yards, I'll use a revolver in .454 Casull or .44 mag. I picked up a .223AI Contender barrel for coyotes a while back but have not worked loads up yet.

Thats a nice bull in your avatar! Did you take him with your 7mm-08 barrel?

Roger that I got lucky that day 190yds and put one right threw the boiler room. He took 3 steps and tipped over.
