And the game continues.......Old School!

While i may not stack big numbers like Infidel, i do seem to be fairly consistent in the fact that i can "usually" scrounge up 1 coyote called per outing. Not all the time but a good majority of them. I don't travel much like i use to and usually hunt one of the most pressured areas in Southern Nevada simply because it's close to home (30-45 min ea way).
This year my quest has been to kill a coyote with every capable firearm that i own that hasn't already, although i will probably give 22lr, 17hmr (already done it once), and .380 a pass.
The first this year was with a cheap AK47 style shotgun i bought last year simply because it looked cool.

Next was my 450 bushmaster that i purchased years ago simply because Uncle Jay would kill coyotes with one back in the day.

Today i decided to grab my Rossi 92, a safe queen that i purchsed used during Covid, probably around 2021 or 22. I refinished the wood and smoothed out the action as soon as i got it home and it's been shot only with light 38sp loads maybe 20 times. I threw together a handful of 357 rounds last night with some old bullets i picked up somwhere and 5 gr of titegroup.

The first stand of the morning was the only producer, which isn't uncommon. It's a high percentage stand that produces more often than not. Started with some lone female howls and waited. Did this a couple times with no response. I then switched to some rabbit distesss for a few minutes and then paused for a spell. Repeated that 2 or 3 times. Around the 25 min mark i switched to mfk pound town and within a couple minutes i had 2 hauling the mail towrds the call from the down wind side as they always do. The trailing coyote caught me repositioning myself and flaired. I had already muted the call but they were on a mission. The lead coyote got to the call and stopped and i was able to get a round in it. It staggered a couple of steps and fell over just a few feet from the call. You can see the decoy in the bush.

I switched to pup distress and tried to work the other coyote back. Even sat for 10 minutes silent hoping it would sneak back in but all i got was some bugger barking from behind enough vegetation that i couldn't see it.

Edit to add. This was a male. Probably a couple years old. All 4 k9 tips were broken off. Im assuming the other was a female.
I made about 5 more stand with no takers and was home by noon. 65 degrees is to hot to be sitting in the sun and it's dryer than a popcorn fart. Even the greasewood flats are all dying out.
The wind was starting to pick up like it always does so i called it quits.

Till the next time.....

Boy does that bring back memories, Lance......ooold memories. My first center fire rifle was a Mod 92 in 38-40 caliber. Picked up (about 1951 or 2) a very old beater w/scarred but solid wood and rusted out barrel. Was fortunate to have an excellent gunsmith friend/mentor who ordered a new Win. barrel and set me up to blue the old rifle, cast some lead bullets and reload a box or two using #6 pistol powder, all while waiting for barrel to arrive. Spent lots of hours chasing jack rabbits with that old rifle before I got a wild hair and sold it to a friend.
That is a very good looking blonde ya got there.

I think the other reason i wanted to take on this challenge was to show you don't have to have a special purpose built coyote rifle in order to enjoy getting out calling coyotes and being successful at it when you are first starting out. Use what ya got and go have fun.

That's great! Irons sights, especially open, are not your (my) friend, even on black and white targets, but nigh on impossible on game anymore. Gotta love those 92's.

That will help a lot! The last time I hunted w/iron sights was black powder elk season in 2001. Colorado did not allow optics so I fitted the Hawken with an aperture rear sight and painted front w/luminous paint. That enabled me to shoot 1.5" off the bench @ 100 yds. Could never have done it w/open sights or without the white front sight.

Awesome story! What a fun quest. I thought of doing this at one point but never quite got around to doing it. I took my Rossi 357 out to a bait pile at one point and tried to take a few long range hero shots but never got a good calling day in before I had to sell the gun.

I missed one about a month ago @50 yrds shooting my 7" AR15 in 9mm suppressed and topped with a reddot. I'll have to revisit that one, and plenty more to come. The pistols will be the toughest for me although i have taken a couple years ago with my Glock 27.
