Ok, time to review that rating thing again.

Manchin calls for discussion on gun control in wake of elementary school shooting

West Virginia Sen. Joe Manchin, a pro-gun rights senator with an A rating from the National Rifle Association who shot a bullet through the cap-and-trade bill in an infamous ad from his 2010 campaign, called on Monday for a discussion about gun control in the wake of the Sandy Hook shooting.

Appearing on MSNBC’s Morning Joe, Manchin addressed Friday’s massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman entered the school and fired on students and teachers with a semi-automatic weapon. The final death toll was 20 children and six adults.

Manchin said that such an event “changed the dialogue, and it should move beyond dialogue.”

We need action,” he said.

Manchin described himself as an avid hunter, but said the types of weapons used in Friday’s shooting were not those used by hunting enthusiasts.

“I don’t know anyone in the hunting or sporting arena that goes out with an assault rifle,” he said. “I don’t know anybody that needs 30 rounds in the clip to go hunting. I mean, these are things that need to be talked about.”

The National Rifle Association, he said, would have to be a part of any such discussion.

“Bring them into it. They have to be at the table. We all have to,” he said.

“Everything needs to be on the table,” Manchin tweeted Monday morning, “And I ask all my colleagues to sit down to talk about firearms, mental health and our culture.”

He said he was in favor of Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman’s suggestion of “a commission on mass violence.”

The West Virginia senator said a discussion about mental health also needed to take place.

“This is bigger than just about the guns. It’s about how we treat people with mental illness, how we intervene, how we give them the care they need, how we protect our schools,” he said.

The fact that the majority of the victims were young children ages six and seven was something Manchin said would make people look at the issue in ways they might not have before.

“I think opening up and seeing a massacre like this, of innocent children, it’s changed things,” he said. “It’s changed America.”

“Never before have we seen our babies slaughtered. It’s never happened in America that I can recall, ever seeing this type of carnage,” he said. “Anybody, anybody that lives in America, anybody that’s a proud gun owner, anyone that’s a proud member of the NRA, they’re also proud parents, they’re proud grandparents. They understand this has changed where we go from here.”

Things are not looking good. Way to much knee jerk reactions going on right now, liberals like Bloomberg, Feinstein, and the media are using this horrible event to push their gun control agendas. Banning ARs is a very slippery slope because I know it will stop these kind of shootings. When these shootings continue to occur what will they come for next?

And taking forks and spoons away from fat kids will make them skinny?

There are a few similarities in the recent shootings that the "experts" overlook. Mental health. Sane people dont commit these types of crimes. Id start with the "upbringin" !

Yea I give him an F! He apparently does not know anybody on this website. The AR15 is the most popular gun in America and most people do use them for hunting or recreational shooting. This guy I think has had his head up his [beeep] and yea he might like to hunt but hes probably like every other politician and says what will get him votes. Then when things go bad he jumps ship to make him self not look bad. Thats the problem here not many politicians are going to stand against gun control this time. Afraid that in the uneducated eyes of America they will look bad. Meaning there are more people out there now days that dont have guns, Know nothing about them and will stand for gun control because all they see is whats on the news. These uneducated people are the same people that voted for Oboma and there seems to be more of them then us other wise Oboma would not be in office. I am just saying the topic of gun control right now is a touchy one and if are reps dont get on top of it we might be screwed because they are bringing everything they have at us and this time they have the attention of alot of uneducated people to back them. People who would never have a dog in the fight but since this time it was so horrific that even they are saying we need to get rid of these "Assualt Weapons". We need some kind of media that has are back on this one but for now it seems like everyone is sreaming gun control and nobody is standing against it. I havent heard one person in any kind of office here of late say they were against gun control. I have heard alot of this talk about a time for change. I have even heard that this spring they were going to try and bring back the Assault Weapon Ban.

A reporter said that "automatic" weapons needs banned now and should only be used in wars. He should not be allowed to talk anymore.

Cmil84 said something right.... A lot of people that are uneducated about guns and hunting are all ears right now and want something done...right or wrong.

I keep hearing that an assault rifle was used,30 round mag and all that, then the next news guy says it was found in the car.If it was used or not,I wish they would get it right. If it was in the car, what has that got to do with anything.

exactly tn... they said that thr AR15 was NOT used in the first reports. Now they are trying to make it the Main weapon it seems. Does anyone have real info? Read any reports? Please post them. If not could this be a ploy just to get the AR15 into everyones mind as an evil weapon by the Media? Sure makes a Guy wonder.

I note that the ones that have flipped so far are dems.

apparently they need to get out more if they don't know anyone who hunts with them.

the kill zone on a coyote is about the size of a playing card.

tnshootist I heard the same reports. First they said he did it with the two pistols and the AR was in the trunk of the car. They even showed a video clip when the news helicopter was flying over filming the police getting in the trunk of the shooters car and messing with what appeared to be an AR. Then the next thing you know they say the AR was found by the body with a bunch of high compacity mags and two handguns. Then they said it was a shotgun in the trunk. The media is speculating to much and not reporting facts. The thing is we may never really know

Manchin needs to be introduced to the thousands of predator and other game hunters that use a AR15 or other models of "assault" rifles regualarly. Saying he doesn't know anyone who uses that type of rifle just shows who he doesn't know.

Has anyone noticed that at least one event like this has happened every year this buffoon has been in office?

We're not going to get any truth from the Liberal media.

I hate to say it,but I don't think anything is beyond what this man would do.I know we have always had presidents who did not always do the right thing. This guy and his people scare me.Anyone who would speak to those parents, and flick away a fake tear for TV is hollow inside.

Originally the state police said it was in the trunk. The Feds came in and said it was found in the school..... Probably never know for certain.
