Annual Groundhog and Woodchuck tally 2015 (no prairie dogs)

Just got home from 3 days of groundhog hunting with my 20vt and 221 fb, both have sporter contour barrels and are pretty lite as I do a lot of walking. Most shots were 100-300 yds. but did get a couple out to about 400yds. Season total now stands at #324.

Looks like the season is about over for me at least. I got out this past week and found a few but they were very spooky. Farmers are starting to take off the beans so there may still be some hope. Longest shot this trip was only 375 yds with 223 ack imp shooting 53 gr vmax. Season total 382.

I am assuming you are just setting up along the field etc.. of a known source for groundhogs and waiting. I really want to try this this coming spring with my rifles it looks very fun and good well needed practice for me.

When I get a new farm to shoot on the first thing I do is walk the property looking for dens and out buildings or homes that may be of concern when shooting. I like to find a hill or knoll to sit on where I can scan a large area and have a good backstop in case of a miss. I like to hunt them on rolling terrain as this makes it much easier to range them. The best time of day is late afternoon but I have killed them throughout the day.

Thank you. I am from Eastern Iowa and we have some open areas to hunt when they first plant fields and some that is pasture. I am definitely going to try this with my son this spring and summer.

A big zero for me!!!!!! The .17hmr collected dust!!!!! Since I switched jobs and done work at a farm infested with chucks (boss was a jerk), no chucks!!! Darn coyotes eat them all out here. Now I am turning into a predator hunter.

I'm not very swift at the picture posting. Only two in the tally for last year, both were around 200 yards. The small one was eating his afternoon snack.
