Another flat tail

Just though I'd share a pic with you guys. I've been out an about hunting flat tails. Had another four beaver night recently which was good. Seems recently they haven't been coming out until the 18:30 mark so I've stopped the early afternoon hunts.

This is a single I shot with my cz combo rifle/shotgun.

Thanks Infidel. This one is a 22 savage high power under a 2 3/4" 12g. Been making ammo out of 30-30 cases and using 223 cal projectiles which are a bit undersized for it but good enough for 40yds type of shooting.

Thinking about getting a red dot for it and using it as my "exploring" new territory rifle. That way if it ends up real bushy I have a shotgun with me and if there's some openings well I've got a rifle as well.

That beaver looks old and like at some point he had dealings with some sort of predator that took chunks out of the tip of his tail.. Maybe there are other sub- species (?) but it looks like its tail is wider than most I have seen....

Tail is tail! Some are short and wide, some are tall and thin. Lol. I know what you mean though. That group of four I shot the other night one of them looked like half of the tail was missing. Seems to be common. Maybe northern beaver have shorter wider tails in adaptation to the cold? Kinda like arctic fox have shorter legs and smaller ears.
Definately an older one though. 50+ lbs for sure. Second one that size I took out of that pond. Trapped one last fall looked almost identical.

That's awesome Doc!! Sweet Combo Gun too! I forget what site I was on but they had 22 Savage bullets. I ( think) they were Hornady, but I'm not positive. If I see some somewhere I'll let u know. 4 in one evening, that's great!

Here one of the two I got tonight. That one took the 12g to the head and the other one took the 22hp while swimming. This was an area I hadn't hunted before and was scouting it out.

Gumboot- I know of a place to get the 22hp bullets in Ontario. Both loaded ammo and the hornady bullets. I heard some run well with the 224. I'll probably pick some loaded first so I can get some brass. The 30-30 tend to be quite wrinkled by the time they size. Right now I'm running the 55gr varmegeddon. I think the 22hp runs on 70's so I'm not at the ideal weight either.

Infidel- you're right there. They all look good through the bottom of a beer glass! This was a younger beaver and the tail is slimmer and probably more like you were talking about earlier. Tail was slightly damaged too.

Muckwa- I think you're right about that. Maybe during territorial disputes as well.

That is so much nicer looking a gun than I'm familiar with. One would be nice in 223 /12 for me as I'm all set up for 223. Yours looks like it has a good scope mounting option. I think a 1-4 Vortex Viper PST 1-4×24 would be perfect for it. With the illuminated dot/doughnut and mil reticle with capped turrets it would b great. On 1 power with the illum on you have a great no magnification red dot sight. Then it can b cranked to 4× if a yote is hanging up at longer 200m range. Do you anneal before you size the 30/30 brass the first time? Do you have to turn the necks?

Scope mounting is a bit of a pita. It has 13.5mm dovetails. There is a mount availiable for it though. Right now I'm just running a rimfire scope on it. The reason I would like a reflex or dot is that scope is as far back as it will go and I can just barely manage the eye relief.
As far as the 30-30 brass goes I'm resizing in two stages. I run it through my 243 die then in the 22 hp. I don't anneal them. I resize without the decapper/expander rod in so be case neck will be tight enough for the 224 bullet. Mileage varies with brass. Some manufacturers turn out pretty good while others are pretty bad. Winchester is ok.
They have been made in 223/12g not sure if it's the brno or the valmet one though. I picked this one up recently and all that he distributor was selling was the hp/12g. They were all used guns.
