Another Great Ohio Groundhog Season

Well, ended the season last Sunday with two more kills; final annual tally in triple digits.

I went hunting 150+ times during the year. No density numbers like some folks in PA or WVA, and that factor along with time available to hunt dictates the annual take.

Another great year with the 22/250, 223, and 222.

Good job Buckeye! The farmers love to see you heading their way. I was born and raised in Ohio. Spent alot of time around Spencer Lake and Medina huting down woodchucks. Whereabouts are you located?

I always look forward to groundhog hunting in the summer, and always hate to see it come to an end in the fall.

Dear All:

I live in NW OH. We have pretty good numbers here but its NOT like you are going to see 20 groundhogs in a field every night.

Density here is not like places where farmland is fallow for years allowing huge colonies of chucks to take over. So, you have to do some walking i.e. actual hunting to get to the game.

Getting shots at 4-5 in an evening is pretty good, and even that tapers off after July when the beans get too tall.

Not a lot of farmers around here making hay either anymore, so you don't have the prospect of shooting over cut alfalfa dairy farm fields a la Northern PA or upstate NY.

If you are working , that too cuts into hunt time; I was fortunate (?) to have April to June off work and time to hunt a lot.

End of the season = Building new gopher getter for next year!

In my area the number of hogs has been down the past few years. Some say the coyotes have it them hard. personally not sure that is the case. I let several walk in hopes they will make us more next year

I agree sounds like a great season, they are not as plentiful it seems here in Central, Ohio. Combination of a few things I think, I remember the days though where I could go out and get shots at 5-6 hogs in a hunt, also much like you I had to stay mobile to get at them.
