You must have missed what I said.

"If someone don't know what they need your there to help them figure it out."

Exactly what I do everyday. I was referring to one's who don't know what they need, but prefer to act like they do rather than ask. Like the guy who tells me a long story about his goose hunting prowness, then proceeds to ask for a box of #8 shot for his next goose hunt. Happens every day. But since he's always right, I'll shut up and sell it to him....according to you.

"If someone knows what they need your there to find it for them."

My favorite kind of customer...makes life easy for me.

" The customer is always right, no matter how dumb they are."

OK, so the next time you say you need .45ACP for your Taurus Judge, I'll shut up and just sell it too you. Or how about some .270 WSM for your .270 Winchester? If the customer is too dumb to know what ammo fits his gun, but since he's always right, I'll sell it too him. Or would that be another funny story about the gun counter guy who doesn't know anything and sold you the wrong ammo?

I don't begrudge the fact that a lot of folks behind the counter don't know much, and probably should'nt be there. But please don't pretend to know what life is like on my side of the counter either.

Most of them around here( Wal- Mart being the worst) are so ignorant that I don't even want them to talk, just listen what I ask for and retreive it for me, ring it up and let me leave.I wish they were self serve!

I've stood beside and listened to enough knuckleheads on the customer side of the counter to know dang well the salesman side can't possibly be all peaches and cream. I'm afraid I wouldn't last very long behind the counter at most places.

My hat is off to ya Texas Solo.

Do you have any idea how many customers don't know jack, but would rather act like they do than ask for help? Trust me, it goes both ways.

Difference is, on your side of the counter, you are getting paid to hear these stories.

What I'm saying with the customer is always right no matter how dumb is. know it all's like the 8 shot for geese. What are you going to say that will change what he buys or says. If he don't take your advice what can ya do. If they don't know what ammo to use how will that be your fault exp for the judge how do you know what they need. Unless they have gun in hand.

And yes I have been on your side of the counter. I liked it. Got to help people with figuring out what they need or with issues they are having. You can tell right away who's looking for help and answers and the ones that are to stupid to take help and advice.

I wasn't looking for a fight with you Im just saying what can ya do with idiots. Plenty of em out there. Heck I hunt in Mn, where you are surrounded by em daily.

Thank you. You understood my post. I just want folks to realize that for every dumb, unqualified counter person, there's 100 dumb, rude, arrogant customers.

It's these threads that lump all salesman together that tick me off. Then everyone jumps on the band wagon, never even considering how tough the job can be.

That's where experience comes in.
" how do you like that short mag over the regular .270 Win?"
"Ha? What do you mean? I have a .270Win"

"I bet that 3 1/2" 12ga kicks like a mule, ha"?
"Ha, what? Is there a difference?"

And if you've spent time on my side of the counter, then you know that they bought the wrong ammo, but you'll get bashed on the internet for selling them the wrong ammo.

Nor I with you. But if you believe that the customer is always right, you haven't worked in retail very long. I guess we'll agree to disagree on that one. Stay warm!

The customer IS always right. They have the money so that means they have the final say. They might be wrong, BUT they're still right. Own a business and it will be clear who really has the last say. I know I could refuse my service, but the fact of the matter is I wanted their business even if I didn't think their choice was the best. If they buy the wrong ammo for their gun how would it be anybodies fault but their own.

Texas solo I agree 110% with you. Been working at a gun shop for almost two years. It is awful. You try to be a good guy and help everyone because as stated that's what we get paid to do...but when you get someone so rude that you can't help but walk away...it makes you sick, and texas...I know you have had one. Gun shows are the worst...I have been told some god awful BS at shows. I think if you guys saw what we meant you would be shocked...and these are the people buying guns...scary

The customer is NOT always right.

spend sometime reading here:

www.customerssuck.com

More stores should kick out the idiots.
I go by a new mantra when it comes to salespeople:
they are just as human as the next person, and corporate could care less about thier problems.

There is one Gun shop in Portland Oregon that has a reputation for their employees or at least some of them being know it all's and it is there way or you are dumber than a bucket of freshly cut hair. I had that experience with them once and have never been back.
I don't go in to a gun store to shop cause I already know what I want. My question is do you have what I want and what price. If the person behind the counter treats me with respect I return it, If they act like a know it all I ask for another sales person or tell them I am not interested in what they think.

Being a counter person you are damned if you do and damned if you don't.A good counter man knows when to open his mouth and when to keep it shut, and are worth their weight in gold to a stores bottom line.

I find these "bash the guy at the gun counter" threads about as annoying as the mind numbing "HMR for Coyotes", "Barrel Break In" etc. classics, so I could really give a rip one way or the other, but dammmm,,, I sure do like that new avitar Dan!!!

Seriously guys,,,, there's two sides to every story and the truth is usually somewhere in the middle, so untill the oter party's here to defend him/her self, it's just piling on..

Would the customer still be right if he was trying to give a novice reloader dangerous reloading advice ?

Leave all the gossip at the beauty shop (err,, uni-sex styling saloon) and talk about guns for crying out loud.

Where did it say anything about opinions. I just said if you don't like reading those threads don't. It's that simple. Someone reading these threads and complaining about reading them is like watching the lifetime channel and complaining about all the womens hygene comercals.

I've been on both sides of the counter and I gauran-darn-tee you that the customer is not always right. Examples:
Had two lady's come up to the counter, and the one that wasn't shaking and stressed to the max, looked me right in the eye and said: "My friend needs a gun to kill her husband with." She was completely serious. Talked her friend out of the gun purchase, and got the lady some help with the local law enforcement.

Also had a unkept group of men (from south of the border) come in during deer season and state they needed a gun to go "keel deer". They explained they would share it (really all 10 of them???) So I go to reach for a rifle when the leader says; "no, not a rifle we want a peeestola." I'm thinking un-uh and what is this "dear's" name again? So I reach in the case and hand them a Freedom Arms 454 Casull. The price tag was well over a $1000.00. He replies that it was very expensive and didn't I have anything cheaper. I lied and said: "nope we only carry high end pistols." T'wasn't true but they left without anymore questions. Never did believe they intended to do any deer hunting, but despite my little white lie about the high end pistols, I slept well that night.

Last story for now. A young idjit in his early 20's comes trotting in my store with a Winchester lever action. Walks right up to me and states loudly that he needs "deer bullets!" I asked him what caliber he says: "Deer bullets, ain't they all the same?" I calmly reply no that lots of bullets can kill deer, but I needed to know what caliber his rifle was. He didn't know how to figure that out, so I offered to look at his rifle and tell him what he had. Before he handed it to me I asked him to open the action, as I did with all customers for safety reasons. Remember the customer is always right comment???...his reply to me was: "Oh you don't have to open it, it's not loaded." I insisted he open it anyway. He flings the lever down and out flies a live round landing right on the glass counter. I grabbed the rifle out of his hands, while at the same time telling him to give me the @#$@ gun before he gets us both killed. I then ejected five more rounds out of his "unloaded" rifle. I handed him his six rounds and now "empty rifle". He didn't say a word, just hung his head, turned around, and walked straight out the door.

There were weekly experiences with mega-idiots, but those are the three that come to mind this evening.
