2 Questions...

-I want to put a NV Gen 3 attachment to the FRONT of my day scope (american made). My price range is up to about 4 grand. Is this possible?? Suggestions please.

- I am going to purchase also either the Flir Scout 24 or 32. I want the critters to show up as "Red" when I use this....does the 24 have that feature?? I have researched them online and can't find if the 24 does....I know the 32 does but I am hunting places where the longest shot would be 200 yards with an average of 75 yards.....TIA

The ATN PS22 in Gen 3 is designed to attach to the front of your scope. There are a few posts in this forum that you can view to get an idea of how they perform. There are also several posts about the Flir thermal units as well. I don't know much about either unit. All of our NV systems are designed for quick attachment on the rear of your day scope and you can use the same monocular for scanning/spotting purposes. Thus, our systems do not require purchasing a separate unit for scanning....you can do both (spotting and shooting) with the same monocular. Kevin

I have a ps 32, I think the 24 has the instalert red feture in 4 levels, but no 2x and is a little bit lower on the resolution the 24 is 240x 180 and the 32 is 320x240. I can't see having a higher resolution ever being a problem, I use the 2x to help id critters at ranges over 150 but scan without it. I went with a dedicated NV 3gen scope as I scan with the FLIR. nothign can hid from it if I can see skin, where as even Gen 3 cant see something well cammod or in brush, but with the ir luminator needed or not eyes will shine.

I hope to hunt tomorrow night with my new set up D760 gen 3 and Flir ps 32

Having the flir is great but you will need the nv to shoot. Why not try a pvs14?

Ps22 gen three is big bucks. I tried the atn gen 2 version. and it was really bad. Sometimes with flir you are not 100 percent sure what your target is so going from helmet to gun with pvs14 would be a nice backup to the flir. With pvs14 and iluminator i cant count teeth...flir only shows red white or black on what is visible...so a coyote hiding behind rock alll you see is a speck of red...thats when pvs14 on gun helps.

The flir ps32 is nice for zooming in...i can see speck of red when animals start coming out of ditch or hill or far away. Also sometimes insta alert red is not the best mode to be in. I use it most of the time but all depends on weather and how much heat and ground is putting out. But you can also save 1000 bucks if you are sure on your distances and terrain.

So folks know, it has been well documented the PS-22 copycat of the REAL PVS-22 has a 50/50 chance of POA/POI issues out of the box.

Over the years we have been notified and on scene with numerous LE depts. and others reporting issues such as these which are major collimation issues. LE Depts on a budget with the bean counters skimp buying the real deal and get in deep trouble with these systems.

Some have reported fine results, but the other half with major collimation issues. LE and Mil users when lives are at stake on a 2-way range need to know about these major issues.

Thanks all for the replies... That's discouraging that the PS22 is 50% wrong out of the box...what is the alternative (if any) of a front mounted gen 3 to my day scope???

Also, I beleive I decided to get the FLIR Scout PS24 over the 32. Can anyone that has one tell me....can I distinguish what critter I am looking at.....150yds or is the resolution too low....and if not whats your experience at a true distance for the identification of critters (coyote/fox/bobcat)... Thanks in Advance

if you can, go the 32 do it just for the resolution and the 2x, with my 32 I spoted a heat source at 150 and had to watch it for a while, thinking it was a bobcat on the sneak in tall grass, it turned out to be a cottontail. had it been a coyote game on!

You can go with a rear mounted PVS 14 or MX-160 on the back of your scope. We have used rear mounted PVS 14s for years with no problems nor have my customers reported problems. I have put together 2 hunting DVDs(47 successful kills with documented 300+ yard shots) using rear mounted PVS 14s that you might want to order ($19.99) ......good entertainment with instructions on how it all works and night hunting tactics. Kevin

check it out here: http://www.hightechredneckincorporated.com/product_p/dvd%202012.htm

If you decide to weapon mount, the PVS14 will work fine if you have good IR illumination. It also works best with a variable power scope with AO, or at least that is what I have found. The larger the objective (to allow more light in) the better and if I have to buy a new scope in the future, it will have side focus.

I have the Scout 24 and it works great. There is a learning curve to be able to identify different animals at times, but I can easily tell a deer from a hog or coyote at 150 yards. The 32 has better resolution, although it's not THAT great a difference IMO, and has the 2X but I would not pay the extra $1,000 for it. Use that toward NV and GOOD IR illumination.

I guess I am one of the lucky guys that have lots of NV gear. I have PVS-14's along with a few other monos,NV rifle scopes, IR lasers, thermals viewer PS32,eotechs,and so on. The first serious piece of NV gear anyone should buy is a PVS-14 if you ask me. Its a jack of all trades and will do many task it may not be the best at everything but it does everything well. You can helmet or weapon a 14 with IR laser/eotech, and you attach a 14 behind a day scope, hand held viewer and so on and on. Its lite in weight and small in size for packing plus very durable really a bargin in its price range for what all it can do and proven military construction. I shy away from ATN stuff went there twice in the past ended up with junk no nice way to put it.You could do a 14 behind a day scope setup I have a Bushmaster ACR setup with a L3 Omega spec PVS-14 and nightoptics day/night scope adapter plus a Luma laser Ir Illum for real dark nights. My 3rd gen NV scope is brighter/ bigger FOV vs the day/night adapter but for pure long range accuracy my Day/night setup is king I can it steel plates at 300+ yards. I just added a IR laser to my ACR also so now when on the move I have my PVS-14 helmet mounted and IR laser to handle any critters in my path. Once at a stand I can still use the laser normal shooting ranges or switch the 14 to the rifle day/nightscope setup for long range shooting if needed.

Very well said, I agree 100%.

Phantom,

All you need now is some form of heat guided bullet and your arsenal will be complete ! I too like the PVS 14, a very versatile NV unit for sure. Nice post !

MaNavy,

Which scopes? I am leaning to the d760 in Gen 3

also, I am leaning towards the Flir Scout PS24. Does this have the "red critter" capability. I am in Virginia and hunting places where I may be able to see 200 yards, is this capable of identifying critters at this range or what range have you been identify which critter it is???TIA

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on the PS24 vs the PS32. Is the PS32 worth the extra money? When I bought the PS32 I had the extra money in my pocket so figured I would just buy the PS32 and not look back. Its been a great thermal for my type of hunting which is scanning/detecting critters and following up with NV. I have friends who have been thinking about which FLIR model to buy the PS24 or PS32.

Seaj, if your ranges are limited to less than 400 I'd go with the D740, over 400 get the 760 I have the 760 and love it but I have open rice fields and pastures my next scope will be a 740 for my 223 I have shot steel plates with a 740 on a 6.8 and a 223 with out a problem @ 300 yards

the difference between the 24 an 32 is the 32 has 2x digital zoom and higher resolution 320x240 the 24 has a freeze frame option instead of the 2x and the resolution of the 24 is 240x180. I don't id with it other than cattle & deer, I use it to locate and then id with the 760 I can tell you the heat sig of a big Texas jack rabbit looks like a bobcat or a small coyote @150+

Id like to hear what MaNavy has to say owning both I have never looked at a 24

Manavy what part of this great state are you in adn what nv scopes do you have?

I also mainly use my PS32 for detection and I use the instant alert(red mode) setting 1 and 2 around 80% of the time. On scopes I have/had many myself over the years just off hand a 740 pinnacle,760 alpha(thin film) not gated),Nighhawk 4X pinnacle tube,Raptor 4X and MK 845 2+ 1.5X model,PVS-4 gen 2,Newcon 310 gen 2+,740 SHP 2+, old 443,343,441 gen 3 models many years ago before the 740/760 rifle scope days, and several gen 1/gen 1 plus dedal scopes along with a ATN paper weight scope

I do find the 3X-4X models better for 90% of my shooting vs the 6X but that depends on the land you hunt and your needs as whats best for me may not be for you. I sold my 760 to buy the Nighthawk 4X but hate to say I miss the 760 more than I thought I would its nice to have a long range setup in the safe when needed. I am thinking of buying a replacement 760 this summer time frame. If you shoot under 100 yards most of the time and like to stalk around the 740 is alittle more compact and lite weight to carry vs the 760. Sitting in a fixed stand overlooking big open fields the 760 rocks 6X mag is great for viewing detail! Heck I better get off this post I am starting to check my wallet for 760 cash!

Bingo, he's on it. I currently have one D740, a Pulsar Phantom Gen 2+, a Pulsar Phantom Gen 3, Sightmark PVS-14 rear mounted. I do a lot of testing for different companies on the quality of their products so I always get to aquire items at lower costs then usual. However that being said here is the list of scopes I've personally tested, most even hunted with.

Yukon Mini varmint Hunter 1.5x42 100 yard scope
Yukon Varmit Hunter 2x50 120 to 150 yard scope
Yukon Varmit Hunter 2.5x50 150 yard scope
Yukon NVRS Tactical 2.5x50 150 yard scope
Pulsar Sentinel GS Gen 1+ both 3x50 and 4x60 models 200 yard scope
Pulsar Sentinel Gen 2+ both 3x50 and 4x60 models 500 yard scope
Pulsar Sentinel Gen 3 Pinnacle 4x60 unlimited yardage IMO, Best scope for the money, but I only found a couple places that carry it.
Pulsar Digisight 4.5x50 300 yard scope
D740 Great scope, but over priced
D760 I personally owned one of these and I had to send it back because it had bad tube flickering. Would have been a good scope otherwise.
Sightmark PVS-14 Gen 3 Pinnacle Multi purpose as you know, depends on how you use it. Awesome exactly the same unit as the ITT Night Enforcer, even the same tube/housing and quality
Sightmark 3x60 Night Raider "Junk" useless past 50 feet!
ATN Thor, 3 different models the 1X, 2X and 3X. All worked quite well but are pricy, but not really when compared to similar thermal optics.
PS32 Great for the money out 500 yards for a human object
PS24 also great for the money out 300 to 400 yards on a human object.

I've also tested many of the ATN ngiht vision scopes and all Gen 2 or below models are low quality IMO. The Gen 3 stuff is decent.

Keep in mind that these are my practical use estimations.

Oh also I'm in East Texas just North of Houston.

Thanks for all the advice......gonna get the D740 and the Flir Ps24....soon.....watch out critters.....no more lights!!!

you will never get a full nights sleep again, it's 10:45pm and i hear my d760 calling to go out to the back 20 and make a stand, if I remove her batteries will she stop calling me after dark?
