Another Swift question

I set down to load some Swift ammo last night and my cases wouldn't fit the shell holder. I have already loaded for this rifle once using Hornady brass and an RCBS #3 shell holder. Last night, I was using my New unfired Winchester brass and it won't fit. A trip to the LGS solved the problem with new shell holders but has me wondering why will the Hornady brass fit the #3 but the Winchester brass won't?? I know the simple answer, they are different sizes but why would Hornady change the rim size on the brass?

Is the #3 the correct shellholder for the Swifto??

Is the rim .473 or larger and if same diameter the rim could just be thicker requiring a shellholder made for the rimmed case.

Actually, the #3 is for 308 size case's. The Hornady brass will fit it but the Winchester won't. It had me wondering how I had loaded for it before. I just got the Win brass recently and hadn't loaded any of it yet.

Dang, Bill! You a can be a real PITA you know that??

So I had to go look. OK then. Two different shell holders (RCBS and Lee) and five different kinds of brass (R-P, W-W, Hornady, Frontier and Norma) and no issues.

And yeah, any shell holder that will fit the 30-06 size rim should work just peachy keen.

You sure you are not just looking for ways to be troublesome in your old age, pardner?

Russ I wouldn't do that to you. I just now went back and checked again and the winny brass will not fit in the same shell holder the Hornady brass will. Its not that big a deal just trying to figure out why. The winny brass is some older brass I bought from a friend but it is new unfired brass.

Only thing that keeps me from jumping is the thought of a 243 loaded with 55s boosts the speed even more in a higher B.C. boolit!!

Well, geeze- I dont know. I guess maybe my shell holders have gotten a little sloppy over the tens of thousands of times a rim has be slid into them. I normally DO use an RCBS #11 but that's because of what I keep in my box with my dies. My priming tool uses the same shell holder that I use for my .22-250, and my .243.

There you go! Now you are thinking a bit more rationally!

Whenever I get the urge for another Swift I force myself to watch old reruns of the Partridge Family and think awful things about doing to Susan Dey for while. So far it has worked.

I had some 22-250 Federal brass that the rim slot was and is still a little thicker than other brands. This was out of a factory loaded box. I can tell every time I load the Federal. It's not a big deal just different. Rudy
