Antelope Eaters Hunt?

Not too good. Saw lots of sign, and I was actually up in the same area about 3 weeks ago and called in one double and one triple within 3 hours (don't ask how many I got!). But I think that they have been getting lots of pressure up there. AZCowboy76 and I called all day Saturday and got one response, but it was just a flash through the brush. Couldn't get a shot off.

Sunday we decided to wreak some havoc on some prarie dogs. That was a blast. AZcowboy76 should have some pics.
 
Sorry to hear that. What area were you hitting? I'm planning on going up in two weeks. Hopefully things will have settled down by then.
 
Well here are our results from the Antelope Eaters Hunt, the coyotes werent being to good to us, but we all had a lot of fun blastin the prarie pups.

Tony,like azcowboy76 and the sahaurita kid said it was tough hunting.Talking to the guys up there they said they just had a hunt 3 or 4 weeks prior at valle and took out 70 or 80 dogs.There were 135 teams or 270 hunters.My uncle merv and I figured seligman and the surrounding areas would be well covered so we started out hunting between ashfork and williams to the north.No bueno.We then went southwest of williams on saturday.The only interesting thing that happened there was we were setup just this side of a little saddle in the pines.We were using a js 612 with a jackrabbit call.I set up a fox I had shot and stuffed with paper on a rod to stand it up and hung the predator supreme decoy from its mouth.Well I started the call and within 2 minutes I see 7 or 8 heads coming hard over the hill.I'm thinking wow I've called in every coyote in the area,that is until the rest of their bodies came into view.I was a herd of mule deer and they came within 5' of uncle merv and then they skidded up to a stop within 5'to 10' of the decoy.They're looking at each other like what the hell is that,that's no baby fawn.Then they bounce away about 100' and stood and walked back and forth like at a shooting gallery for the next 15 or 20 minutes.Talk about where in the heck is my camera or video.Things like that happening really make you realize anything can and will happen when you call.My uncle merv and I had a pretty good chuckle over that.Tony it seemed like every coyote brought in were mainly females and talk about small.I was there when the game & fish lady was weighing them.We're talking 22-24# approx.I think 1 team brought in 4 coyotes which was the most by 1 team for a day I believe.Good luck when you head up let us know how you do.take care daveyboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Thanks Guys. We're headed to north of Ash Fork too. Damn. I got permission to hunt a couple ranches up there and the deer guide said their thick with coyotes. I hope we have better luck. At least it will be nice and cool up there. I'll let you know how it turns out.
 
I FINISHED THIS WEEKEND HUNT (ANTELOPE EATERS) AND IT SUCKED. OUT OF 140 SOME TEAMS THERE WERE ABOUT 40 DOGS TAKEN ON SATURDAY AND ONLY 12 TAKEN ON SUNDAY. OTHER THAN CALLING IN ONE BOBCAT, I DIDN'T CALL ANY DOGS. MANY HUNTERS THOUGH, VERY HOT WEATHER. MAYBE NEXT YEAR! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
 
Man, 300 odd guys runnin around the same woods. I sounds like the coyotes must have been runnin for whatever cover they could find. :eek:

Tony,I forgot to mention the guy that was there collecting all the coyote furs was saying he averaged $33 for his coyotes at the globe fur sales. And his highest price fetched for his top bobcat was $375 while the average for his 13 bobcats was $175.He was 1 tough dude as he sat by the trailer full of dead coyotes all day in the blazing sun.Talk about an aroma and this is the best part he said he took up to 2 days to skin them all.Well when I used to trap I skinned those yotes as quick as I could.They skinned so much easier while they were warm.I just smiled at him and wished him luck.take care daveyboy /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
 
Well,the 15th. "Antelope Eaters" has come and gone for another year.As stated earlier,135 teams signed up this year,to partake in this annual event.The weather was a none factor this year,as almost perfect calling conditions were present.

Sat. saw 39 coyotes brought in for inspection,and registration.At the 9 p.m. deadline,$2050.00 was handed out via "Raffle Ticket" drawings.Many callers/hunters won a 50 dollar bill for just signing up,and having there 1 ticket drawn.

Sun 2p.m. deadline saw another 18 "Yotes"brought in,and most of Sat crowd was still present.Most were waiting to see just how many $50.00 drawings they could win.Another $2000.00 was handed out. A "NEW" 22-250 was WON by a lucky Caller,also a FoxPro Caller was in the Raffles.18 other prizes were drawn with raffles.

For Myself and my Partner,We called in 3 coyotes on Sat,but couldn't get into shotgun range.We had been sent a "NEW" shotgun shell from Reminton "Hevi-Shot" loaded for Predators with a "T" shot,a little smaller that #4 buck.Sun saw a "Beautifull" calling morning again,but try as WE may could not call in any "Antelope Eaters",so NO yotes were taken by this NEW ammo,this Hevi-Shot load should be in stores soon,for Serious shotgunners

I talked to local region 3 game warden,Tim Pender,and told him that all the attention that the "YOTES" had recieved in past 15 years from all the Contest/Hunters had finaly paid off,as I this time actually saw more Antelope in 2 days of calling than "Yotes".This is what the event is all about,anyways.The "Caller" that came the furthest for this years "A.E." was Patrick Dietz,all the ways from Minnesota.Now that is a "Hardcore".Thats all for this years "Antelope Eaters" --- /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
