Another love of mine is antique barb wire. When the fellows go hunting with me they get mad because every fence I climb over I'm constantly looking for old wire. Any collectors out there?

Ive collected a few pieces where the sun dont shine if you know what i mean! My butt is a barb wire magnet, lol.

Thats a cool hobby a very challenging due to the fact of the lack of it. Its hard stuff to find.

No, I never gave it second thought actually, what is the differance between todays and antique barbwire. Fence rows are a part of every stand I make.

j hun, I collect a little out of our fences hear and there. There is around 300 miles of fence on our place, most of it was built 70 years ago so there isn't a whole lot of antique stuff. Sometimes you can find old stuff around old homesteads.

SBF, I have a little collection of 23 different types of old barbed wire dating from 1861 to 1887, I even have the names of the barbed wire.
Most folks have no idea this many kinds of barbed wire was out there at one time or another.
Actually, barbed wire started some range wars back in the 1800s.
Fences can even cause some problems to this day. Darn pic didn't turn out to good, sorry.

I used to collect some years ago. My son has my collection now. Billy, I too would like to see a close up of your collection. I also agree about the range wars. The history on some of the wire is real interesting too. I used to have a book with alot of pics and history, now I need to go try to find it.
Billy, wasn't the start up money for the Chappel Spade ranch from a barbwire patent? They are headquartered in Tucumcari(I know thats 100+ miles from you)

Wow, I never knew there was that big of a history of barbed wire or that people actually collect it! Might have to go check our fences, some if it was from back when my grandpa built our place.

When I first started collecting wire it was a popular hobby among many people. In the 70's I traded with people all over the U.S.A. I found miles of what they call Hodge's Spur Rowell and that is what I built my collection with. Since then I have sold the collection which had over a thousand different pcs. Some were really rare with a price of over 300 dollars for a cut 18" long. Now I just look for stuff when I'm out coyote hunting. Getting very hard to find the good stuff anymore. I'm sure there is still some in the hedge rows in Kansas. Happy Hunting!

Tried to send you a PM, but wouldn't work....anyway, I have some antique barb wire that I found while surveying...it looks like saw teeth wrapped inbetween two strands of wire... If I could get camera to work I'd take a piture for you, and offer it to you if you want to pay postage.

Yotecaller1 I know the type wire you are talking about. It is called Crandell's sawtooth wire. We have quite a bit of that wire over here in South Dakota. Thanks for thinking of me and I appreciate the offer. I have a couple rolls of that wire. Keep an eye open, you might find a good one.

I think that's it's a fine hobby.

Somebody thought more of some of our wire than we did thought ....... they took it from an existing fence ..... from post to post ..... chopped it right out!

If it's some of that 300.00 per 18" stuff ...... I might need to go with gun and bedroll and guard it!!! LOL!!

Three 44s

j hon, I have a piece of Crandal wire dated 1879. A couple others that are cool looking are Stubb Plate 1883 and Spur Rowel 1887, also Frentress 1875. If and when I get my digital camera fixed I'll post some pics.

Wow Three 44s, modern day cowboyin includes shooting barb wire restlers, man how times have changed lol.

These are some wires I found around the country in the 70's when barbwire collection was very popular. I traded with a lot of people around the U.S.A. Had over a thousand different wires in my collection, but I sold the collection to a guy in Colorado.

I've got a collection of wire that I brought home from my dads. There are probably two dozen pieces. I was going to try and identify, label, and display. How do I go about identifying them. I've seen a couple of them in these pics that are posted. k-2
