antique barb wire while coyote hunting.

K-2, You can get a book call Bobbed Wire Bible by Jack Glover on the internet. Just type that in. If you can just send me a e-mail with pictures and I will identify the wires. Hope this helps.

I used to collect some years ago. My son has my collection now. Billy, I too would like to see a close up of your collection. I also agree about the range wars. The history on some of the wire is real interesting too. I used to have a book with alot of pics and history, now I need to go try to find it.
Billy, wasn't the start up money for the Chappel Spade ranch from a barbwire patent? They are headquartered in Tucumcari(I know thats 100+ miles from you)

No, the Chappel Spade ranch was originally part of the Bell Ranch. The Bell Ranch was a huge land grant which was divided into 4 ranches which are the Chappel Spade, the T-4, the Clabber Hill and the Bell. I suppose that someone who held a barbed wire patent could have bought the Chappel Spade at one time, I'm not sure about that part of it.

Post a picture and I'll identify them for you. They do have books you can buy to help a person Identify the wires. One is called the "Bobbed Wire Bible" by an Old Texan Called Jack Glover. Look that name up on the internet and I'm sure you will find the book. Another book is Allison's book. Barbed wire collection in Texas was real popular at one time and I delt with a lot of those guys back in the 70's. You know the old cattle trails came up through Texas and on up into the Midwest. Kansas is a real good state to find old wire. Also in hedge rows.

NMRancher, just saw your reply. Thanks for the info. I had a friend who worked for the Chappel Spade, and I remember parts of a conversation. The history on the bigger ranches is as interesting to me as some of the history on those old barb wires.
Where in NM are you located?
