Any 17 caliber cleaning rods recommended

I have used Dewey's all my life, they are flimsy.

When using rods of this dia, you need to be very meticulous in how you push and pull the brush and patch with deliberate slow actions. Jerking the rod back and forth, and stabbing the bore like you are playing pool will get you in trouble.

Slow and easy, deliberate strokes especially when you are getting the brush and jag to enter the bore.

Super tight patches on a punch type jag will kill your rod.

Tipton Carbon sounds like the way to go when I replace mine.

I just bought a Tipton 36" from the local Scheels. My 17 WSM is acting like it needs a bore cleaning, and I have no clue where my .17 cal rod went! Anyway, the store had a ProShot, and a Tipton, and after reading other threads like this one, I got the Tipton. It was a couple of dollars more, and it did not have a brass jag, so even more money than the ProShot, but I remember others saying go with carbon fiber for the .17 cal rods. I have Deweys, for .20 cal and up, and REALLY like those rods...And yes I have bore guides. So I thought let's try the Tipton, for the tiny bore. I am heading to the shop now, to actually clean the 17 WSM. I missed two crows this morning, that should have been dead crows. So either this thing is slinging bullets, or the scope is off. I got one two days ago, so the scope is probably not the culprit. Anyway, to the bench!

Just a follow-up report on the Tipton .17 cal carbon fiber cleaning rod. In a word, "NICE". Very little flex, and no rod distortion, when it did. I really pushed some tight patches down the bore, just testing how the rod would handle that. It did with no issue. I might use this rod, for my .20 cals, instead of the SS Dewey I have! The handle is smooth. It is heavy, and if there is one nick against the rod is the handle being so heavy, doesn't balance the rod well. I have a long cleaning rod rack above my cleaning bench(kind of like a horizontal fishing rod rack), and the balance is so bad on this rod, that I have to capture the jag end of the rod, to keep it in the rack. Not a big issue...I guess it is the price to pay for the nice handle.

Perhaps the handle feels heavy because of the lighter weight of the carbon fiber? I haven't used one in a while. Any one piece for should work fine if used properly.

Most complaints I've read come from people upset that they broke something when they pounded on the end.

I use Dewey rods for everything.....can't say they're the "best"....they're just what I've always used...

I did have the coating peel on a 17 rod once but Dewey sent me a new one pronto....no questions asked...
