Any 270 Weatherby Mag fans here? Need info

Hello all, I'm considering adding another gun to my collection and am really intrigued by the 270wby. It seems very versatile and has really impressive ballistics. I'm aware it's expensive to shoot, burns a hat full of powder and recoils quite hard, but this is not an issue to me. I just like the less popular rounds and don't mind the added cost of the Weatherby.(Please don't reccomend the 270WSM as I'm not interested)

Any 270wby fans here with good in-sight on the cartridge? Are there any idiosyncrasy's I should be aware of? Does it shoot factory loads well? Is it finicky to load for and does it respond well to reloading? If I can get a big yammering magnum cartridge to shoot an inch or better, I'll be happy.

Thanks in advance for any insight provided.

I have a BAR in regular 270 win. & it shoots V-MAX 110 good, also sierra 110 grains. 150 grain partitions would sometimes group super tight. I see 257 on rare occasions, but not very many 270 weatherby mags.

Don't know about the 270wby but I had a 257wby and it would hammer deer. Shot under 1 inch w factory ammo. Sold it after I broke my back because of the weight hurt to carry it. I regret getting rid of it every day.

i've got the 7mm wby mag. Had a 24 inch barrel on it. Never could get ot to group very good . Had a custom 26inch barrel put on it, but have not got out to shoot it yet. killed 3 elk in last 4 years with my bow though. REALLY want to get a coyote with my bow!!!

The .270 Wby. is a fairly easy cartridge to load for. It does respond well to handloading. On the other hand, don't forget to try factory fodder also. It is hard to go wrong with a good Sierra 150gr SBT at around 3300fps (this cartridge responds very well to long barrels). With a cartridge that shoots this flat, a point blank minute of deer zero, out to just past 400 yards is possible. 500 yard field shots are not difficult with this cartridge. Recoil is manageable.

I wonder why wby. even made the 270 & the 7mm mag? aren't they pretty much the same thing? I'm not all up to speed on rifles as iprobably should be.

PC,

I'll probably start first with Factory loads. Looks that to maximize the ultra-high velocity capability of the 270wby, Factory loads are the ticket.

I've been perusing some old articles written by Ken Waters and he indicates that achieving Factory load velocity's with handloads is difficult to do, but accuracy wise, handloading will typically yield equal to or better than results than the factory stuff.

What powders do you like with the 130 grain bullets? From what Waters states, IMR-7828 and H4831 are the way yo go.

Just picked up your post. I have and load for the 270 WBM. The rifle is accurate, recoil is not that bad, and likes the heavier bullets 130 gr. to 150 gr. with IMR 7828 and a mag primer.

My present load is Federal primers, IMR 7828 powder, topped with 140 AccuBonds. The load clocks avg. 3228 fps. Do all the brass prep work you would do for unbelted rounds and try partial sizing or neck sizing your brass.

Quarter Round has made a very good suggestion...IMR 7828 is a good place to start. You can best the velocity of factory ammo in most instances by following good loading practice. Start low and work up. Pay particular attention to your seating depth with this cartridge. Sometimes you can eek in a couple more grains of super slow burning powder by seating the bullet further out. Most .270 Wby. rifles have the notorious run-way length freebore, so don't be afraid to use it. Other good powders are Retumbo and N-160 for both the 130 and 150gr. bullets. The Fed. 215 primer will be your friend.

I have a couple 270 wbys. I love it. You can get close to 3500 fps with the 130s and 76gr 7828 powder. Work up to it. Use a bonded or mono bullet to hold together at that speed. Doesn't recoil too bad and once you get brass its not that expensive to load for. You can fireform 7mmremmag brass to it as well.

It is in 257 wby and the 264 winmag company and is about as flat shooter as one could ask for.

I have shot several deer and a handful of elk with it. No problems.
