i generally hunt the rock springs/green river/cokeville areas but haven't heard much this season about dogs. anybody hunt that region and know how it has been?

Your're kidding, right! There are THOUSANDS of coyotes around the Flaming George. I don't have any pics of the dogs but I do have a pic of the rabbits I got just outside Manilla, UT (just across the boarder). The coyotes are thick because the rabbit population has been so high the last few years. I hunt with my brother and a friend and it never takes us more that 2 hours to get 10 rabbits each. Even when were not hunting coyotes we never fail to see a half dozen or so between Evanston, WY and Manilla, UT.

i hunt the area around dutch john quite heavily each year all the way over to rock springs, so the question wasn't so much "do dogs exist in the area" as "has anybody gone out lately". nice stack of rabbits. we got into them thick last weekend out towards Yost.

I think knowing that about 6 contests have already happened in that area in the last 2 mos would keep me from even thinking about going there.

well, against advice of others, my dad and i made a trip up to rock springs. we went from rock springs to dutch john via county road 33 then back down to 38, over to the firehole, then as high as we could on the goslin then out to the gasline over flaming gorge making stands as often as we could........1 coyote visual, 1 heard.......and 3 friggin rabbits in roughly 500 miles.
the wind was whipping so my hand calls may not have been getting out as far as i would like, but still, this was a joke. i think sat. i will head out towards jackpot NV instead and see how i fare.
regardless of how the hunting was, it is always great to get out with my dad and have a few laughs.

Definately not like prior seasons. I am not sure if it's entirely contests causing the problem, but dogs are slow in sweetwater county. Between a buddy of mine and I, we have well over 100 stands with 3 dead dogs. Just a lot of new hunters I think. Last year we had over 30 between us at this time. [beeep] we got 8 in one day. Not that I am liking all this talk of out of staters targeting my back yard, don't waste your time!

My dad got two out of 5 last friday along the Blacks Fork. But that was before the contest on Sat. But till then he has had a dry spell.

I don't know about the concensus, we have just been hammered in this area. I was actually thinking about making a Dutch John to Vernal run this weekend. Good info to know that it's been hit hard too.

Yup, you all catch on rather quickly...

Seriously though it seems like a lot of Utahns seem to think the grass in greener on the other side of the border... and as you found out recently, it isn't. Our part of the world gets hit hard too. There's plenty of nice public land in Utah, I used to live there. With as many Utah plates as I see out hunting sometimes I wonder if there are any Utahns actually hunting in Utah...

Had a few of them hunting on top of me out by Cokeville last weekend. It got bad enough that I eventually just gave up and called it a day.

I am new here in this great state, and one thing I can tell you (along with others) there are plenty of Utah hunters that hunt in Utah. Man I have really struggled with the popularity of one of my favorite past times. I finally came upon an area last weekend that isn't hammered to death. Only took about 6 weeks of looking. Was actually able to call a couple in. From what I have heard from the guys at work, you are correct. Hunting in general is seen better out of state unless it is a limited entry elk tag. Just a bunch of people here that like to hunt, which I like and struggle with at the same time.

Its all good.

Happy hunting everyone.
