Any Fellow .17 Rimfire Hunters Here?

Like you after Savage claimed they were making them, I told my local gun dealer to snag one when he could and that was 2 years ago. Really didn't see anyone have one until this year, so I got on several list to be notified when they had one in stock and Hinterland came though. Since then I've been notified by couple of gun sites that they have some, but don't seem to last long.

I went to visit the store where I ordered my Savage A17 Sporter .17 WSM two years ago. Ol' Larry has only one jobber he orders from and nothing has shown up so I asked him to check with some other jobbers, and he is. View attachment 9857

I have seen two hunting seasons pass without the rifle. Our season opens August 31 and I have held high hopes the rifle will arrive. Meanwhile, my BMAG .17 WSM will have to fill the gap again. Picture of the fabled Savage A17.
I had the same problem when I started looking for one. I signed up on their "wish list" and they sent me notices when they had one. I missed the first one but was able to get the second one. They show "IN STOCK" at the present time. Great guys to deal with.
Only problem I have now is trying to find ammunition. I have had the gun for over a month and can't find any 25 grain ammo for it:mad:

I have a CZ 452 American in .17 HMR that is wonderfully accurate with CCI 20 gr. Game Points. It’s a great crow sniping outfit, and worked very well on groundhogs out to distances over 100 yards. It’s so accurate and flat shooting that head shots were the norm. I also have a Marlin laminated thumbhole stocked HMR. It prefers the Hornady 17 grainers. I love the .17’s, including a coyote deadly CZ 527 .17 Remington centerfire.

Here's one in the flesh, had it several months now. I got it from Hinterland Outfitters, I was on their list for when they had them, still get messages every now and then when they have them in stock.

What's the trigger like in this new version 17 WSM A17?

I have a Sav. A17 Target Sporter Laminate in 17 HMR that's a pretty good little shooter but that's after I overhauled the trigger because out of the box the trigger was absolutely horrible and easily the worst trigger in any kind of firearm I've ever owned. It took some doing, about half a day of working on it, but I was able to get it tuned up to a nice clean 2lb break and it's been a good little pea shooter since.

Killed all sorts of stuff with my .17HMR over the years. But that .17WSM blows it away performance wise. I've killed several coyotes,a gray fox, a beaver, some skunks, a few armadillos and lots of prairie dogs and jackrabbits with my buddies B-Mag.

He got some of those Winchester Varmint X 15 grain varmint tipped bullets or whatever they call them a while back. If you hit a squirrel or prairie dog in the head with one of those, it's decapitated. Not much of a head left to look at. The lower jaw at best is all that's left. I don't know how fast those light weight bullets are zipping out of there but they're pretty rough on light weight critters. I even killed a coyote with those from a distance I probably shouldn't have even been shooting at it from but it worked out. First shot hit it in the neck, knocked it down and the next one got it right above the eye.

I feel pretty confident that any coyote I hit with it within 125 or 150 yards ain't gonna go far. I've had a few run but they only made it about 25 yards before piling up. If we had a lot of foxes around that's all I'd use.

I'd like to know what kind of accuracy you are getting with the A17 in 17 WSM? I really like the ammo, and am on my 4th gun in that caliber. This is a great small game load and they are very accurate with range out to 300 yards. I currently shoot a suppressed Volquartsen with a 6.5x20 Leupold. This past winter I used it on a coyote hunt, and took three coyotes with the Winchester 25 grain ammo. Shot one at 268 yards. It is a great gun for prairie dogs. Very fast for a rimfire. The only issue, as you know, is getting ammo. This really sucks. I still have about 3000 rounds, and could triple my money if I sold it. Not gonna happen. WE need some reasonably priced ammo. Let me know how that gun shoots.

About the best my A17 WSM sporter does is shown below, and that's with my lead sled rest at 100yrd. That's with 25 gr Win. For what I intend to use it for it should work.

I would love to let you know what kind of accuracy but until I find some ammo I don't have a clue.

Tried a 17 wsm for about a year, we don't have P Dogs or Sage Rats or Squirrels, I've got lots of guns i can punch paper with for plinking i would rather us my Red Ryderi just can't find room in my gun safes for a 17 anything. Murl B.

17 HMR is great around settled areas for knocking of groundhogs, pigeons and other vermin. My suppressed Tikka T1X is wicked accurate and ear friendly. Safe too with the 17 Vmax bullet as they fragment readily.
