Any hunters in NY for coyotes?

Hi All,

New to the board and am enjoying the great reading.

Im in the rochester NY area and also have a camp in Swain NY where there is plenty of coyotes. I've been out once without luck, they were howling but nothing came in. After lots of reading and several videos I have come to realize that all that information is relative to western hunting. I have read some articcles (one on the foxpro site) that said hunting in the East is completly different and had some pointers.

Are there any eastern hunters that can get me started. The deer and turkey population are really starting to take a hit. DEC found a coyotes den with 17 fawn skulls and several adult deer.

THanks,

Spike

Spike- Welcome to the predator masters forum. I'm from rochester also. I'm also fairly new to the forum to. This is my first year coyote hunting and only called in one(no kill). Its not easy. I hunted in Birdsall this year saw a grey fox when we calling, had no shot. Lots of yotes near the swain area. My buddy has a camp in Birdsall. We hunted deer there this year and it was bad. mor coyote prints than deer. We gotta wack' em .

Spike,
Put on a pot of coffee and read everything on the "Calling in the East'' site on this board.Read everything that Sleddog, Jimmie in KY and Rich Cronk posted 5 times then read it again. There are several others that know Yote poop from boot polish but these fellas are amongst the best.
Good luck ,have fun and enjoy this board.Treat it right and it will be the best source of info on the planet for hunting yotes

WhatI have seen yote hunting is that that come in more that you think. Hunting alone you miss seeing a lot of dogs before the see or smell you.
Remember to camo and sent free yourself just as good and bowhunting. Don't overlook the turkey call and howling this time of year. One day just for fun no guns I went out with 5 fellow hunters put the caller/person in the middle and each of us went in 5 differnt direction. Only the caller called. 4 yotes were seen by differnt people and the called seen none.

Swain? well years ago I remember doing some primestar installs in Pennyan & Bath. Nice area out there. I'm always looking into the feilds while driving in the country.

Welcome Spike. Hunting the eastern coyote is like trying to locate a single school of fish in the entire lake - small pods that cover a lot of ground. And unless I missed that page in the Cabelas catalog, there is not yet a 'yote-finder' that you mount on the front of the truck.

It's been a quiet year around here for coyotes. I think the numbers are down, as many days afield and many miles hoofing have not shown a single fresh coyote track. This is in cover that have produced for me in the past. But fox have been running me over (I don't shoot fox) which reinforces the turf-wars theory.

Find the coyotes and they are quite easy to call. As for the deer herd being down, that is primarily a result of poor deer management by the state, over selling doe permits, 'brown/down' attitudes by hunters, and a long, cold winter last year. Sure coyotes eat fawns, but they really are not the reason. Good luck and be safe!

I live in Allegany Co. and have been in the Swain area recently for work. It seems like a good area for yotes. We have started hunting this year too. We mainly hunt fox but want to get into yotes too. It is much harder to call in yotes I think than fox. Keep reading and good luck. If you can get permission from a sheep farmer or someone like that you may have better luck.
