I grew up in Eastern Idaho and we use to get tons of cottontails in the fall/winter. Now I'm in Boise and I've never really found any spots with the same numbers of rabbits. Get a few now and then, but mostly just happen across them while bird hunting or something. I assume though that you are talking about shooting jacks?
Yea mostly, my uncle has an alfalfa fiel though and ended up with a cotton tail infestation that I've been fortunate enough to have been asked to take care of
Not as many Jacks as there are in Utah but I still manage to get out one weekend a year and have at them. Think me and my cousin gave up when we had 10 Jacks each, didnt know what we would do with any more.
Managed to get a nice snowshoe hare this winter. Had it skinned and tanned. Wouldnt mind getting a few more to make myself a hat out of.
You really need a beagle to locate cottontails if their population is low. They are smart and hold in thick cover while you walk right by. Without a dog its really tough unless their populations are way up.
I hunt jacks and cottontails here in East Idaho. The numbers last year were low but we managed a few. I hunt with 2 Jack Russels that help flush and find the the near misses. I just hope the numbers are good this year because my oldest boy can start hunting them this year instead of just tagging along.
