Any love for the M1A?

I've always wanted one and am working towards a purchase as we speak. Could be a S/A "Loaded", National Match or maybe a Super Match I found from a private seller.

Anybody here own such a beasty? Care to share possible tips, tricks and load data with a M1A fledgling?

Get thee to an Appleseed shoot and learn to shoot that beast from position with a loop sling. Then you can go try out the National Match course at a CMP/highpower shoot. Great stuff.

I used to work at a Gunshop in Indy, and it had a range where a lot of NRA shooters used to gather for coffee and pistol shooting. I met a couple guys that used the M1a for long range rifle shooting. It is a killer rifle right from the box, but even better it can be made even better for accuracy if needed. I love the short Carbine model for hunting. It would be a great rifle for out west. I'm also partial to the .308 cartridge. It's a great all around bullet with little recoil, and yet can handel about anything in North America. Might be a little light for Polar bear or something, but otherwise, I'd not be afraid to use it for most hunting. The sights are great, the rifles just work in my experience and are balanced, etc,. I just can't say enough about them, but again, if I were looking for a new .308, I'd give a hard look at the AR type rifles in the same caliber. Like the Armalite AR10, etc,. I think they probably have some features you can't get with the old M1a.
Just my two cents which aren't worth much.. hehe

I had the bug for an M1a. I bought one about 18 years ago, used it quite a bit and even hunted coyotes with it. It was a fun rifle. I sold or traded it at some point about 3 years later. Since then I've owned quite a few 308 black rifles including 2 hk's, fnfal, armalite ar10t, and dpms.

I thought every one of those other guns was superior to the Springfield and I'm not knocking the Springfield. That armalite was one of the most consistently accurate rifles I've owned. The DPMS was extremely accurate as well. The HK's and FN were a riot to shoot. If I were to stick with one type 308 it would be the AR.

I have an 18.5" M14 carbine (had a rifle too, but recently sold it). Our market here in Canada is flooded with Norinco M14's (Chinese) which are only $400 new as compared to $1200++ for a Springfield. My Norc now has a USGI fiberglass stock and shoots very well after some minor tune ups. It makes a great fun/SHTF rig but it's by no means a match grade rifle. From my understanding the Springfield Loaded or Match versions will shoot extremely well right out of the box - obviously, you get what you pay for.

The M14 platform is very popular here in Canada because they are "non-restricted". Most AR platform rifles are "restricted", meaning they can only be shot at a licensed range and require special permits to transport to/from the range. And all our rifle magazines must be pinned to hold no more than 5 rounds.

M1A ..... nice piece of hard wear. Gives me a nostalgic , yet secure feeling. The accuracy , recoil , 20rds of 308 makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

I have an M1A national match and it is a really good shooting rifle.Has an excellent trigger for a semi auto and is a pleasure to shoot.I shoot handloads using sierra match king bullets with great results.

Yep I love mine. Ihave killed lots of paper and two groundhogs with it so far. Working up some 110 gr vmax loads for it now. Should do the trick on coyotes, woodchucks and pdogs.

I have one that isn't even a "loaded" version and it shoots well. I traded a nice AR build for it. I got the factory walnut stock and a usgi fiberglass stock. It's more consistent with the fiberglass stock.

It also came with a McCann Industries scope mount. I have a Nikon Monarch 4-16x on top.

Is it a flawless weapon? No. Is it for sale? Heck no.

I have it torn down for Duracoat at this very moment.

I have a Springfield Match that I bought a number of years ago. I painted up a couple of stocks to use during different times of the year srt up with Karsten's cheekpieces for scope use. I also have a Springfield scope mount for it with a Springfield 4-14 scope. It's a lot of fun to shoot, and is my end-of-civilization, SHTF, zombie hoard rifle because of firepower. Not that I don't like AR's, I have 5 or 6 of them, but the M1A can kill anything that walks or crawls in NA. Can't say that about an AR, unless you go large frame. Then weight comes in as a large frame AR is heavier than an M1A.

Also go here for some M1A eye candy. http://www.jallenenterprises.com/index.html

I ordered a stock from them last May. I expect to get it in March. I knew the wait going in and it is going to be worth it.

I've always wanted to get an M1A, and was just wondering if a guy can take off the muzzle brake/flash hider, and still have a functioning rifle.

You'd have to be using either a scope or a gas lock front sight, since the front sight mounts to the flash suppressor.
