Any Montana hunters?

Hello All-

This is my first post since living in Montana. I come from Idaho originally and I have found a great difference between Idaho and Montana hunting. The difference I am refering to is the lack of BLM land here in Montana, especially the West side of Montana (Bozeman area). Most of the land in the Bozeman area is private and very difficult to gain permission. I was just wondering how many coyote hunters from Montana read this forum and if you would make yourselves known to me so that we might talk.
Thanks for any response,
Steve

Your from bozeman eh. We're not to far apart, I am about forty miles east of you. There really isn't much for public lands around (movie stars buy up all the land). Forest service can be good calling if the snows not to deep to get to it.

Try going to the members club house there was a Montana check in list posted there not long ago, I think most of the Montana members posted on it.

Good to here of another Montanan out there, good luck finding some land, and critters.

Mountaindog,

There are few of us here on the site, myself and howler tend to post answers and questions the most.

As for the Bozeman country, lots of forest land and you'll find plenty of coyotes in the foothills but getting permission may be difficult. Folks in your part of the world tend to "hug" things and have a dim view of us harvesters of the natural resources. If you'll purchase some BLM land maps, you'll see numerous chunks of public lands to the north and east of you. I would search these out and give it a try. Don't forego knocking on doors. Not many folks will turn you down if you explain what type of hunting your doing. Have fun and welcome to the site.

I'm up here just outside of the Kalispell area. My problem here is finding areas that are open enough to see for a ways. The forested country I'm in has plenty of coyotes but is short on visability. I've called in a few but not enough to make me think I've got this country figured out. I'm using a cassette caller with rabbit and woodpecker sounds. I'm really interested in this howling concept though. Do they make tapes of the different howling communications? Or is mouth blown the way to go?? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Hello from Glendive! I am new to this place and to coyote hunting but have lived in Glendive most of my life. Alot of BLM land in this area, and I am finding it very easy to get permission on private land. There seems to be 2 magic words that get the landowners attention, "KILL COYOTES". Yep those ranchers seem to perk up and you get right on the place. Hope you find some good places to call over there. See you around.

Well, here is another Montanan. I'm from Colstrip, about 1.5 hours east of Billings. I just found this site today, but already enjoy the heck out of it. There is not a lot of BLM land around here, but there is a lot of Block Management. Most of the ranchers around will let you on their land, as long as we obey their rules. Haven't gotten out much yet this year. I have been mainly using a JS casette caller. Works great, but, damn thing sure gets heavy after a while. Good luck everyone.

Hi guys, I live about 25 miles north of Great Falls. I'm a 4'th generation farmer and have no trouble getting access to hunt coyotes. Alot of farmers and ranchers prefer that the coyotes, fox and badgers were thinned out. I know it is probably tougher to get access around the Boze. area, but I'll bet if you talk to the fish and game, they might give you some ideas and maybe names of ranchers that have some coyote problems. I think if you just talk to some ranchers and explain to them that you don't drive off of the trails and walk to your stands, you'll more than likely get access, and make some new friends.

Good luck,
Brent MacDonald

Hello from Helena, I used to live in Boise. Having the same problem around here - not much public property. The Forest Service is mostly high elevation timber, hard to get to in winter.

hello from glasgow, I am surprised at all the Montana boys on board good to hear from you,
lots of BlM here but still usully drive 50 to 75 miles to start hunting, put on 220 miles just the other day all for 1 coyote. So if your willing to do a little traveling you will find lots of coyotes cause there is plenty in your neck of the woods

Howdy,

I'm from Missoula and just registered tonight.
I hunt 360 from town and sometime I hear more Coyotes from my house then on a hunt. I hunt with a Wildlife Technology electronic caller and hand calls. I also have been using my dog(a 10 year old Pitbull) and that is a real kick.
