Any New Mexico Hunters?

4949, if you don't like cold, stay away from Gallup or the Northern Mountain region. We got down to -16 once this winter & Gallup is often a little colder. Red River, Angel Fire, or Red River are occasionally the coldest in the nation.

Be careful what you wish for! In some places New Mexico has some hot and real dry air. A 100 plus and zero humidity is easily possible in the desert areas. Finding a good moderate area is also possible. It depends on what size town you are looking for and how accessible it is to the larger cities. I want peace and quite, basic shopping and medical care in town. But I want major medical facilities, decent shopping and entertainment within an hour.

If you were to draw a 60 mile radius around Albuquerque, you would find some wonderful communities that fit your lifestyle. Much of your decisions might come from income, hobbies and long term dreams. but my guess is one of the twenty or so communities in that radius would fit your bill.


With the exception of college, I have lived in New Mexico my whole life and have been all over this state, I love it, and I appreciate the diversity that you find between communities. I also love the terrain and weather differences. You can drive an hour in any direction and find a difference in both of those things.
 
We live in Texas but spend quite a bit of time in Ruidoso, NM, if you need it there is good medical care, and Lubbock, TX and Albuquerque are just an air flight away. Roswell to the east also has good medical, an hour by car. Shopping is expensive because Ruidoso is a tourist town, snow skiing in the winter and horse racing in the summer. Now property is expensive, way out of my league but we bought years ago.

You might want to take a few courses in Spanish you will find it very helpful. There are a lot on New Mexicans that use Spanish as their primary language, and yes they are legal and some can trace their roots back to way before New Mexico became a territory. They were here first, before the gringos tried to change them. Besides it helps to know when they are talking bad about you.

Ditto that. Socorro is in a terrific location.

I'm up in the NE corner where we have a) mostly private land, b) one of the windiest spots in N.A (I've recorded 82 mph wind on my weather station and we get 50-60 fairly regularly), c) cold, cold winters sometimes (subzero temps and I've seen -60 deg windchill on my weather station), d) not all that many coyotes, e) isolated. You'll be driving 150 miles for medical care.
