I've been around the block with most Factory produced calls out there, and I'd say if you're only going to have one call, that's the one to have (I'm a collector of sorts, have over 70 factory calls).
The Primos Randy Anderson Double Cottontail (Orange Laminate wood mouthpiece, plastic bell) is my favorite "Factory" closed reed call out there. None of the factory calls really hold up against custom calls, since there just isn't the time in tuning put into them. I almost exclusively used the Double Cottontail from 2000ish through 2010 when I branched into custom calls.
Pretty much all closed reed calls use the same guts (predominately JC reeds), but how well the body design and material gets the sound out of a call is what stands them apart.
Any closed reed call will be vulnerable to freezing up. I can't think of the last time it's happened to me, but it does happen (one of the luxuries of living in KS where our temps aren't usually quite so low). Blow backwards through it, or stick it in your pocket to thaw out. I usually have the habit of blowing backwards through my calls a shot or two after each series when it's super-cold out.
All in all, I'm a big fan of the Primos Double Cottontail call. By and large, most of their Factory calls are pretty good, very servicable as hunting calls.
