I am from South Dakota where there has been a season opened for mountain lions around my home. i am in college but went back last weekend and will probably go again this weekend. there wasn't any snow last weekend but there were all kinds of tracks but didn't have any luck. snow is falling now so hopefully this weekend will be better. Anyone have any helpfull hints for me? i have tryied calling using fawn distress on the primos Kiyi, is this an ideal call? we also have 2 walker treein coonhounds that we took out last weekend but were unsuccessful. we can do anything but use atvs. When is the ideal time to go out? is it better to spotlight? The dogs ran the creek for a while then went to the hills, is this typical for a mountain lion to do? ANY info will be usefull. Thanks

First thing in the morning and dusk have been the best for us,whenever game is active they will be out moving,if you can find a stashed kill you could stake it out and wait to see if the cat returns.Spotlighting is illegal for cats here.

Hounds are your best bet, but for best results you need dogs that are trained expressly for bear and cat.

That said, you can use border collies or even beagles to tree cougars and certainly calling works.

The area I would look for cats right now would be just up-country of wintering game herds.

With respect to calling, much has been made of cougar sounds and they work. The problem is that many say that only a male will usually come into a cougar sound due to the females desire to protect her kittens. So your use of a deer distress is not a bad first plan.

The best thing I can tell you about cats is don't call to an empty ampetheater! It is so simple that it sounds silly but as it's probably harder to get "in range" of a callable cat than it is to actually call it ..... providing you have called coyotes ...... another real smart nut!!
