Any Virginia Hunters Here?

H-n-F, I grew up near Richmond, but I live in Dare County, NC. I run a charter fishing business on the OBX at Oregon Inlet, been here 35 years. I've been hunting in Bath for over 20 years and I lease, year round, a 200 yr old house that sits on about 5,000 acres of private land with the Jackson River running through the pasture in front of the house. The land is probably 3000 acres wooded and 2000 pasture. It's also bordered on one side by the GW National Forest. I spend as much time there as possible, averaging about 3 months per year. A month in the fall hunting Turkeys and Deer, a couple weeks in April hunting turks, and another 6 weeks or so scattered throughout the year hunting varmints.

As recently as 8 or 10 years ago Coyotes were only a rumor in the area. Then we started shooting a couple each year while Deer hunting and now it's gotten to where we see them constantly, in both the woods and in the pastures where they like to hunt mice and rodents along the riverbank and fencelines. The first morning of Turkey season last Spring, the first thing I called in was a 'yote that thought he was about to have a poultry brunch. This past November, on election night, I kept going out on the porch during commercials to "check the weather" and it sounded like every Coyote in the state was tuned up in my vicinity. I know they're decieving to hear, but it sounded like I could hear 30 or 40 of them giving a concert in all directions from my house. It seemed there could hardly be anything else alive in the woods besides 'Yotes, that there was enough of them to eat the place clean. It's amazing how fast they've taken over the area.

I've shot a few while Deer hunting and the aforementioned one while Turkey hunting, but I'm just getting into actually hunting them. So I have a lot to learn and I'm looking forward to gleaning some valuable info from this message board and website. I've done plenty of Fox calling, and although they're not 'Yotes, I expect some of the experience I've gained from Foxes will apply to my newest endeavor. I have all the gear necessary for night hunting and I'm in the process of getting rigged up with a good shooter.

Bath has a $50 per head bounty on Coyotes too, but we always give the carcasses to the landowner's Dad, who takes them to the courthouse and collects the loot.

Oh, and there was a verified kill of a 78 1/2 lb Cougar about 4 miles from me last March. Verified to me personally by a local Deputy Sherrif and the local Game Warden. It had been killing a neighbor's sheep.

Here's a view of my frontyard and my backyard. My little bit of paradise...

Bacova,

Nice pics. That's God's Country up there in Bath Cty. Well it's all God's Country. I'm a couple counties over from you and I hope the secret doesn't get out how beautiful sw va is!!

I was all pumped up to start Coyote hunting but I might have to put it on hold for awhile. I was jogging this morning and got clipped by a car and messed my knee and elbow up.

Positive note. My trigger finger is fine. With my new CZ on order, I'm sure it's a matter of time til I get my first 'yote.

If you reload, i think you can get some better bullets for the 204. I'm not shure but is remingtons accutip bullet a fragment type bullet like the v max? If not, that might be a good option. I think the 204 should have enough power behind it for at least 400 yards. I may be wrong though. But, if i knew my gun well enough, and was practiced up with it, i'd probably take a shot at that range on a coyote. I want a 204 in the future.

As I said in an earlier post, I'm new to long range Coyote shooting with varmint caliber bullets. Most of my past kills have been with Deer rifles.
Over the last couple days I've been studying ballistics and energy charts of various rounds that I know are proven Coyote killers and lots of them don't measure up to the .204 for downrange energy. After further review it appears to me that the 500 ft lbs @ 400 yds is plenty sufficient, as is the 389 @ 500 yds. The .22 Hornet doesn't have near the energy of a .204 throughout it's entire range, and I know that many a "yote has gone down to a Hornet.
Once again, I've displayed my ignorance. But I'm willing to learn, LOL

Hey Fella, I'm from Disputanta,VA. Heard stories about 'yotes around here ..only time we see 'yotes dead here is when some idiot deer hunter practically gets run over by one and accidentally shoots the thing..been shootin varmints out here in God's country now bout three years...

Hey W Tes Song Dog Assian, I cant seem to get you to go hunting with me....and your my little brother.

Hey guys.....this guy is my shooter. I call them in and he pulls the trigger of my AR .223, named "the Dead Zone". I am about to quit calling you bro.

Anyone interested in going...I will call and u can kill just let me know....hahahahahah Vinny

Hey roaddog----we are Texas bound in a few weeks!

I'm very familiar with the booming Metropolis of Disputanta. I grew up hunting on my Mom's family place about 5 miles South of Waverly, near Newville church. I haven't hunted anywhere near there in about 30 years though. It being in the middle of Dog Style Deer hunting territory, which I consider to be the most intrusive, disruptive, disgusting method of hunting ever invented.

I do however, know a guy who killed a 'Yote in Dinwiddie. Just like you described too, almost got run over by it while (so called) Deer hunting.

Bacova,
Thanks for the scoop! Man, 5000 acres of private land in Virginia just blows my mind. 500 acres is very impressive for a piece of land around here. And the location.... a sportsman's paradise...You are truly blessed! Keep us posted on your success this year..

First coyote I saw was standing on the shoulder of 460 just outside of Disputanta one night about 6 or 7 years ago, I called the VDGIF the following day to ask about it and after pulling teeth they reluctantly admitted yotes being killed in the area. 2 years ago while working on a farm about 5 miles from there I was calling one evening after work and called in 6 greys and 1 yote at the same time.....got so dazed and confused never got off the first shot /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif )
