Anybody use amplified computer speakers?

Can I use amplified computer speakers and a cd player? Or would I need a horn type speaker? I might be able to rob the amp out of the computer speakers and connect the amp to a horn. But I wondered if just using that amp/speakers would work. TIA
 
whitedogone, funny you should mention the amps in computer speakers. I gutted a comp. speaker about a week ago that had a 9 volt amp in it. I made a spare e-caller using it, a sony walkman cassette player and a 5" horn speaker. That baby cranks. It's 10 times the amp the RS is. This thing sounds identical to my old JS512 in clarity, possibly more volume and a bunch lighter. Great amps in those comp. speakers. Grab all you can. Larry
 
whitedogone, I wondered about the lil 9 volts too. I took 2 of em and wired em pos. to pos./ neg. to neg. then to the amp. Still have 9 volts but should be a longer lasting 9 volts. Anyways I used it most of the day last Sat. and it was still going strong at the end. Time will tell how long it lasts. By the way I also *afro* engineered up some wiring to run the Walkman on two *c* size batteries instead of the two AA's. Should make the Walkman last a lot longer too. Larry
 
ok whitedogone heres what I did. There is only one amp in the set of comp. speakers. Correct? The one amp is used for both speakers. I got the amp gutted out of the one speaker and on that amp there is a 1/8" female mono jack that originally was used to drive the other speaker. I just plugged a 1/8" male into that and wired it to my horn speaker. This amp I got from these speakers also has a volume control wheel and what I believe is a tone control wheel. There is also a jack for headphones on this amp but it isn't amplified so don't even bother trying it to your horn. ************ As a side note I also found a couple of mini amplified speakers that uses 4 AA batts(works out to 6 volts). They each had there own amps in them.I'm playing around with these too. A 9 volt batt. seems to work fine on these too so far. There a no frills amp with no volume control but the player volume control seems to work fine with these also. Not near the volume output of the other amp but plenty for any callin situation I can think of. I just imagine there's many many variations of these amps out there in comp. speakers depending on who the manufacturer is. If you find the right one life is good. AWESOME AMPS I'm tellin ya. Love to SD but I really have no idea. The really,really good amp came out of an old pair of speakers that I kept when one of our comps. took a dump many years ago. The others I salvaged out of speakers I picked up at goodwill for $1.50. lol Believe it or not I stopped by goodwill tonight and picked up another set of speakers identical to the 1st ones I gutted with the GOOD amp in it. Pissed me off cuz I had to pay a whoopin 7 bucks for these. lol I think the key to gettin the GOOD amps is look for the speakers that use the 120AC to 9volt DC reducer AND have a volume control. The comp we have now has those speakers but the wife has done laid the law down to me on those. She threatened to casturate me if her speakers come up missing. Larry
 
Thanks for the reply. I think I found what I have been looking for, now just have to wait till it arrives so I can try it out. Currently I am using the little RS Mini Amp, and it is working OK. However for using the E-Caller for Howling I don't think it has enough volume. The new one should be better in this respect.

Thanks larry, I thought I might have to use BOTH channels of the comp. speakers. I'll try just one one channel. Mine are Sony w/ 120 to 9 volt, vol,and bass boost. Mine also from an old machine. I ripped out the driver from the speaker with the amp. It will save weight and I might try to put a rechargeable 9 volt battery pack in it.
