Anyone call Badgers?

On a recent gopher hunt, the ranchers that I talked to, told me to kill every Badger I could find. That turned out to be none. So I got to thinking, is it possible to call one out of its sett? I would like to give this a whirl but really don't know what I am doing in this realm. I checked the Foxpro site and it does not appear they have Badger sounds. If any of you have tried this, did you have any success?
 
Greg223, badgers can be called in, but I don't think it's common place. They can also be called out of a hole.
I've seen a few badgers take the deep 6. Most were at night when they are most active and they were taken by accident, right place at the right time. I know of a few people who have called them in. One guy I know says he kills maybe 50 or 60 a year. That's alot in anybodys book, but this guy lives in good badger country.
 
There are quite a few around here. I've called in 4 of them and my buddy has called in 4 or 5 also. Daytime only here in NM unless you have some nice private land to hunt. All of ours were daytime.
 
I called in a badger & grey fox one night this past winter at the same stand. They came in to a cottontail distress call. The bagers den just happened to be within 100 yds of where I decided to call. This is the only badger I have ever seen also.
 
It seems that I've called in more badgers around prarie dog towns than any other place. Whenever I set up near a dog town I keep my eyes peeled for those low eyes to come waddling through the sage brush. Just my experience. I've seen them called out of brushy areas, too....but by far most of them have been at or near a prarie dog town. Only makes sense, I guess.

Here's a pic of one that was called in and taken during the daytime back when I used to make more day stands. He was first spotted following a coyote (as best he could with his short legs) while the coyote moused around and checked out the prarie dog town. It was fun to watch and I even caught it on video even though the quality isn't the best. After I sat down and began calling the coyote winded me but this guy came barreling in and showing no caution at all. He was around 25 yds. away and facing me when I pulled the trigger.

Actually the first one I called came out of a hole to the Cronk "Killer" call. I had just got it and had to try it out. Set up on a bit of a knoll that happened to have some badger holes. I was calling for coyotes and wasn't really thinking "Badger". About 30 secs, of calling brought one out of the hole. I shot him and continued calling. a few minutes later 2 coyotes came in on the run. I managed to drop both of them. Gotta love the Cronk calls. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Since then I have called in perhaps a half dozen with distress calls of various description. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif the others weren't in holes.
 
The best way I found is to take about a 30 foot rope then loop the first 6-8 ft around the hole. Put a water hose in the hole and when he pops up, Jerk the rope, just remember to keep the rope between you tight as hell. Oh and put a snack in your pocket cause you'll be a while. I was so stubborn it took me two hours to get my rope back.

Try a bird distress or a high pitched fast paced rodent distress sound. Set the Foxpro 30 yards or so from freshly dug badger holes. Sit back away from the FP hit the remote and watch the hole for a badger to pop out. Areas with lots of ground squirrels, and calling right at daylight helps increase the odds.

We called this badger last winter. We were just calling for coyotes using a rabbit distress and had a pair of coyotes show up in less than 10 minutes. We got the first one and missed the second, but we kept calling. After another 5-10 minutes the badger came lumbering across a huge open flat. We watched him come in from about 200 yards out. He died within 10 feet of the coyote (about 30 yards from us). I am not sure I have any ideas about how to specifically call them, but this one definitely responded to the rabbit distress.

Greg I'd love to go but you have to hold the rope. Nice score the knapper, it shows that the set isn't over after the shot. I think the coyote Doctors video showed one following a coyote around a dog town while they were calling. The one I roped was in winter right daylight.
