Anyone else like 257 Roberts?

I really like the 257 Roberts. About 4 years ago I put a 257 Roberts McGowan barrel on a Savage action. With 110 gr Accubonds its my favorite rifle. 3 Antelope and a Coyote so far.

Yep. That was one of the few critters not killed with Barnes bullets. It was a baited hunt, so we knew the shot would likely be close. We opted for softer heavier 120 grain soft points, some old factory loaded silver tips if memory serves me. One shot to the heart, bear did a 180 and Mama put another one in the same spot on the opposite side before the bear made the trees a dozen or so yards off and died within sight.

That's fantastic, I do wonder if I'll ever get chance to go for a bear. Maybe one day

Are you stuck with this straight wall cartridge rule? Seen that new Winchester 350 Legend?

Yup, just added Straight wall stuff this year. So, of course I ran out and bought a Marlin GBL in .45-70. Easy choice for me. I had the Brass and reloading stuff from years ago, when I shot some Black Powder Cartridge target competitions. Shot two Does with 420 cast during gun season.

I will look up the 350 legend, I haven't heard of that yet.

Well then, easy choice! 350 Legend would be an option for AR type rifles or small bolt actions like CZ527 or the Howa minis

I had a Ruger 77 many years ago in .257 Roberts. I tried everything I could to make it shoot well, including changing stocks, recrowning and bedding the action. I really wanted it to work well but I sent it on down the road. The cartridge itself is a good one, nothing special but just a good performer.

That’s a shame though there does seem to be a generation of the 77s that didn’t shoot great

15+ years ago I was given a Remington 722 .257 Roberts barrel, it was from a friend who found it in his grand father's things. I had it sitting on a shelf for several years. At a gunshow I found a barreled action in good shape and with a little time at the gunsmiths, and a nice original stock from a member here I had the old barrel attached to a rifle...I got brass and dies and bullets and rolled up some ammo. the guns shot really well and I just planned to keep it as the one Remington in a Winchester house. I had a buddy that fell inlove with that little rifle and bugged me for a year to sell it to him. I finally gave in and it lives at his house with some Remington 721s and 700s

Meanwhile I love my .243

I had a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 257 Roberts and wish sometimes I hadn't traded it off, but as much as I would like to have another and have passed up a few I probably won't. Shooting the 25-06 I don't see a reason to. Thought about it alot and would likely build a 6mm AI Remington instead to push light bullets real fast.
