I am pretty new to coyote hunting and was wondering if anyone has ever eaten there coyotes. I like to eat wild game. I have about 6 different animals in the freezer now. But i have never heard of anyone eating them. Most people skin them in the field and leave them. If so how do you cook them?

To me they would not be edible. They carry to many diseases such as trichinosis, outbreaks of sarcoptic mange, an infestation by microscopic mites that causes thickening of the skin, loss of hair, and itching. Heartworm and hookworm are other common parasites of coyotes. Coyotes may also suffer from diseases such as distemper, canine hepatitis, rabies, and parvo virus. Not the kind of stuff you want to put in your mouth.

More power to you .Lewis and Clark said they weren't that bad.Not for me though. As far a trichinosis(cook to 170F),mange,mites,worms and many other conditions mentioned are also common to pork production. One time I saw an article in a hunting publication where they had tried almost everything from mice on up. Wish I could remember where it was at cut coyotes were included. Bon Apetit.

I suppose they're like eating any other dog, except for them being full of nasty viruses, parasites (mange), etc. In some parts of the world, dog is a staple in their diets. My self, I would not eat one no matter how well cooked it was, but if you're hungry and don't have anything else...well....It's up to you.

I have always been a advocate of eating what I kill. I have tried everything from beaver to 'possum and alot of stuff I would not mention here. I just cannot bring myself to eat a coyote. I have looked at the meat and sniffed it and that was about as far as I got. If you find some recipe that makes it apealling let me know.

Does anyone feed the meat to their dogs? It would seem that if coyotes eat dogs, dogs would eat coyotes. Seems a shame to just leave a carcus in the field, although something will eat it even if it is just magots. No, I not interested in trying it myself.

That would be IMHO about one level below eating Skunk... While there are some that might consider it either "alright" or good. I just can't get my mind around it..... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I know a guy who would eat anything and ground up a coyote in to burger and made chile out of it. Didn't tell the kids what it was. said it taste ok going down but when you burped it tasted just like they smell. yum.

In the book "Undaunted Courage" written from the journals of Lewis & Clark, as I recall they said that dog was a favorite among their men, preferred over venison and other animals.

Personally, I don't think I would try it! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I always run into a few "special" people who ask me if I eat what I shoot....like its good ethics or something. What I always tell them is "no, I don't eat them....but I do sell the fur and use the money to buy food"

Try that one on for size, next time an "anti" darkens your door!
