Anyone familiar with the .280 caliber? (pic)

That Rem 280 is a great shooting gun with a good amount of knock down power way out. You did good, you should be very happy with it. An excellent deer rifle!

I've known Greg Meyer for about 4 or 5 years now through fishing pursuits that then carried over to hunting and firearms.....

For a year, while I kept thinking ".243", I kept hearing Greg's voice whispering in my ear - all the way to St. Louis from Chicago - "7mm... 7mm... 7mm...!"

I ended up with the 7mm-08.
I'm glad I did!

Sig SHR 970 rifle with a .280 barrel shooting Federal Vital Shok 140 gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips means dead deer at 324 yds (range finder) with a Sightron 3X9X40 SI scope. Next day took another nice 8 pt. with it. I'm sold on .280 Remington caliber. Good luck with your "wise choice".

So. Dak.,
Everything you've been told about the .280 is correct. A buddy of mine has a Remington BDL in .280 and really loves it. Thus far he has never had to track a deer after shooting it.

I had read in the past that you could really make the .280 shine if you handloaded for it. However, there seem to be many factory offerings that should prove to fit the bill.

By the way, I have the Sightron SII 3-9x42 on my Remington .30-06 and LOVE the scope. If you have not used a Sightron before, I think you will be super pleased with the Sightron/.280 combo you got there.

I'm shooting a Ruger stainless with the Hershey bar stock in .280. The group size is inversely proportionate to the amount of money you spend for a box of ammo. Basically, the cheaper the ammo, the better it shoots. Except for the Fed Vital Shok 160 gr Accubond. That's an "expensive" box of shells that shoots awesome. The 11-14 dollar stuff shoots at about the 1-1.25 groups consistantly. Planning on taking it to elk camp the day after Thanksgiving with the Accubonds. It'll be a long time before I give up that gun. Good Huntin to ya. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinning-smiley-003.gif

PS I agree with skunkylure...remington should get out of the ammo business. I don't feed Rem's to any of my guns anymore.

The 7mm express is just another name remington put on the 280 rifles, I bought one new for my son along time ago. This one has a 22 inch barrel, your CDL is alot nicer and has a 24 inch barrel so you'll be shooting a little faster. Basically a 7mm06. Paul
