Anyone from Virginia?

Just wondering if anyone is from Virginia, Christiansburg area. I'm a big woodchuck hunter and I'm moving to VA in the next two months, I know nothing about the area or the varmints in the state... Are there a lot of hay/alfalfa field in the area? Does anyone hunt woodchucks in VA?

Any info would be great, I don't even know if I'll be able to get a license in the state right away...

Im just outside Richmond, Va., Ive lived here all my life and I dont know what a Woodchuck is? "if a woodchuck could chuck wood" sorry man thats all I know. But, lots and lots of whitetails almost statewide. There is a $50 bounty on coyotes becuase they made a strong comeback and killed alot of sheep&goats. I have yet to see a coyote but a buddy who lives in the western part of the state(Botetourt County) killed 4 yotes the other night. He killed one coyote that was black. Lots of groundhogs waiting for you on the farms in the western part too. Its hard to get permission to hunt in my area - even harder if you want to use a rifle. But the western countys will welcome you, its a good hour or two drive from where i live. I mostly Bow&Blackpowder hunt but once i get a good varmint rifle(.243,6mm, or .25-06) I'll be putting some miles on my truck. Varmint hunters i know, usually carry a .22-250, but you must shoot a .243 or greater to legally hunt whitetails.

YEP i collect the bounty's on them but in tazewell the bounty is on bobcat and coyotes.I use a Weatherby Mark V Delux in 22-250, and a Sp-10ga in 3 1/2in #4 shot...JS 612 e-caller..red lense 2million candle spotlight...6-24 Leo Impact scope.. And A woodchuck i have never know of one in Virginia.

243,

You should have some pretty good Yote Hunting in that area. Not sure so much about the groundhogs though. You may have to venture a little farther up 81 to get into more of the "heavier" farming areas.

I'm near the Staunton / Waynesboro area and there was plenty of groundhogs up this way, at least until a few years ago ... lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Virginia's Hunting License goes on sale July 1st I believe, so I'd just make sure not that your current state's license doesn't get lost in the move and take that along as proof that you have hunted before and you shouldn't have any problems.

Hey fellows , just east of Richmond here, right beside the good ole richmond airport.
Dont know about a bounty on yotes in Henrico or Charles City , but always though a Wood chuck was a Ground hog and there aint no shortage of them rascals , I think they work for the state watchin cars for the state police, standin on the side of the road teasin ya!!
Well anyway in the back of the Virginia huntin and fishin rag, thats the one not by the game and inland fisheries, this month is a pic of a guy with 2 yotes killed openin day(deer) in Charles City, Well he was huntin with the same group i was huntin with, deer huntin, which honestly is the most often critter i hunt except sleep, but we got all the beast, deer , turkey , fox ,cat groundhogs, crows, opposum, coon , yote, cept bear , and I have seen one of them too but most folks think im nuts so take it for what its worth
Well back ta bed Good luck

I had a big big black bear run by me 25yds in Goochland county during deer season 2 years ago. The same friend who shot the black yote has a brother who trees bears all the time. He just like the chase/dogs bark. He said we could come up during bear season and put us on one no problem. He can tree 3 bears on a good day and has like 80 on videotape. But what sport is there in shooting a bear out of a tree. We might do some coon hunting with him though...cracker jack dogs w/ tracking collars. Again they live in the western part of the state in Botetourt county. Some guy in New Kent county was attacked by a rabid yote. The yote was chasing him on a riding lawnmower. He ran in the house and came back out to roll the yote(waiting for him) with the trusty 12 guage. No BS it was in the Times-dispatch. But 99.9% of the time im in my treestand, all i see is deer and turkey. Bobcats are very rare where I hunt. Ive seen 3 bobcats since ive been hunting, and all 3 were traveling together. Id like to see what would come into a distress rabbit call, but im thinking it would mostly be foxes. Lots of red and grey foxes...i had one almost run over me during spring gobler season. He was the only thing that responded to my turkey calls that morn. Night time might be a whole nother story.

Well I was just down to Blacksburg/Christiansburg area this past weekend... I stopped in to a local gun shop and asked some questions to get the rules down... Turns out that there are quite a few groundhogs down there, as well as deer and trukey, but he told me that finding a farmer that will let you hunt is hard to come by. I'm pretty bummed.... I was looking forward to a great hunting scene there... Maybe once I get settled there a while some of you Virginians can take me on a hunt...and show me how its done.

Yeah there is quite a bit of GH here i know of 3 more besides the 4 i done killed just haven't had time or anything to get them..
