Anyone from Western Maryland?

Hey jspike,

Not Western MD, but I am moving to NW Baltimore Co. in August for work reasons. I am from Washington State and have hunted the west most of my life, but I did live in Balt. Co. once before, from '97-03. At that time my work was so hectic and my kids were so small that I didn't have much time to hunt or fish.

I hope to try to get plenty of hunting in this time though, especially since my oldest boy is now 9 and full hooked on it. I'm sure figuring out new areas will be quite a challenge!

How have you been doing on coyotes back there, been having any luck this year? From what I've read on this board and elsewhere coyotes are something of a different game back there than what we have out here in the sagebrush country.

Hey javafour. As a beginner I'm not having much luck. I haven't been able to get a lot this summer though so I'm hoping things pick up this winter. I know that they are here but I haven't figured out how to get them to come all of the way. I had one come up behind me last week. At ten-fifeteen yards away i'm just glad it wasn't a bear cause the grass was so high I almost didn't see it.

LOL...at least they are coming to your calls! I've never pulled on in that close, you getting 'em with a shotgun?

Speaking of bears, wasn't there some controversy this year about bear hunting back there? Antis trying to end it (as usual) or something?

When I get back there I'll probably try to get out to Western MD for a fall turkey. We have all three main species here but I've only ever gotten Merriams and Rios, never an Eastern, so that will be a somthing a little new.

Actually I was using my .204. The yote came from a completly unexpected direction in grass about four feet high. I got just a quick glimpse as I turned around.

The bear issue is really touchy around here. Where I live (Garrett Co.) is pretty conservative while much of the rest of the state could be from the Left Coast. They shut down the hunt after 30 some bears were shot. Becuase of wako complaints. That ended up 20 short of what we were supposed to get to hunt. That's for the whole state. I have seen black bears that many hunters would give a arm and leg to get a shot on. They are huge. The ironic thing is that while the antis are trying to keep the hunters from killing the bears the oldtimers are doing just that.

jspike1 I'm in Howard county Maryland, I attend beagle field trials in Fredrick.
I was hoping to do some coyote hunting in Western Md. this
coming season. I was at a field trial about 2 years ago,
and a pair of coyotes went down an old mine shaft, one
of the club members tried calling them in the following day, but only had a red fox come in.

OK...got the family moved and settled in Owings Mills and at the first moment the wife wasn't lookin took the boys out to scout some WMA's over in Washington County.

Boy, hunting this place is gonna be quite different that the Eastern Washington desert country! That's OK, though, I suspect all this thick cover will reduce as it gets colder...gosh, that 'crunch' 'crunch' sound on the old leaves on the forest floor here sure makes it tough to get around quietly, though.

BTW, the Maryland Deer and Waterfowl Hunting Guide had a couple articles on coyotes in W. MD.

I'm going to try to get out w/i the next few weeks and make a few setups and see if I can get anything to come in.

How have you guys been doing, any luck lately?

With the heat I haven't been able to get out much but with the weather cooling down I'm goiong next week. My parents house sits on the edge of the mt and mom's been hearing them in the evening. Hoping to try sat evening. And java you'll grow to detest that crunch. Unless you got a lot of patience to sit all day in one place. Did you see any sign that far east?

Java, I assume you are talking about Indian Springs in Washington Co.? If so I may be able to get you headed in the right direction.
With the gas prices I am not sure if I am going to be able to hunt in Md this year, $155 non-resident plus $3.25 a gallon means I may have to stay in Pa. this year.
Shoot me a PM if you want to hear from someone who has hunted Washington Co. for a few years.

Jspike, I didn't see any sign but I didn't cover as much ground as I'd liked to have so that didn't discourage me too much.

Lungbuster, gotcha on a PM. Yes, very interested to read your thoughts about the area.
