Anyone have a 6mm Ackley Improved

The gunsmith is supposed to have dads gun ready around the end of the week. It started out as a remington 700 vs 22-250, but it will now have a shilen select match #7 contour barrel with a 1-14 twist chambered in the 6mm acklet improved.
My question is what are some good starting loades to work up some fireforming brass. I have varget , reloader 22 and H4895 powder. We will be shooting 70 gr bullets

I have a couple of buddies 'round here that do.

The kill things (deer, 'yotes) WAY out there with their 6mmAIs. I'll see what I can find out from them re: loads and suggestions.

As far as fireforming, I do now that they just fire factory Remington 6mm loads, and voila! fireformed cases.
 
With the 14" twist you can only shoot the light short range bullets. Do not waste time and barrel life trying the high BC long range bullets.

Jack beat me to it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif I had a .244 built one time. This is nothing but a 6mm Remington with a one in twelve twist. A one in ten twist would have been a better choice for the 6mm "improved". With the 0ne in fourteen twist, you are stuck with the light weight bullets. In regard to loads, you should be safe in starting with maximum load listed in your reloading manual for 6mm Remington and work up from there. Watch closely for any pressure signs.
 
With the 70gr bullets you will probably have the best luck with varget. That is what I shoot in my 243 ackley and it shoots awesome. As for fire forming, do as rich said. Find the max load for 6mm with the 70gr and varget and form away. With the max load you will get good sharp edges with one firing.
 
I go along with the others... a 6mm with a 14" twist will be a very limited rifle - if you haven't fitted the barrel yet, I would change it to a 9" or 10" twist.

Reason is that the .22-250 is a medium range varmint cartridge, and the 6mm family can increase the range by about 30+%, but only if the heavier bullets are used.

With the 14" twist, you will be limited to 60 and 70 grain soft points. I doubt that the 70 grain poly tiped bullets will stabilize, cuz they are longer for their weight.
 
I'm planning on leaving the barrel around 27", I think an honest 3200fps might be possible. IIRC Sierra shows loads from a 26" tube @3200. I think it will do ok for Long range coyotes but mostly I have in mind F class shooting.

I am getting a shade over 3200 fps with 100 grain ballistic tips out of my 26" barrel in .257 A.I. and IMR 4064 powder. I haven't tried to push it any further because pressure signs seem pretty hard to detect on an Ackley case. At any rate, I think you are pretty dang close with your estimate of 3200 FPS with your 6mm A.I. and 107 fps.
 
My 12 twist 6AI likes the 58 Vmax and W760 for a fireforming load.

In fireformed cases, it likes N550 with the 70 gr. Blitzking or 75 gr. Vmax. Varget didn't work near as well, in mine.

I've got two 6mmremAI one is set up as my antelope rifle other LR PD rifle both have 1/10 twist barrels. My 6mmrem has a 1/14 twist hart barrel and it shoots the Nosler 70gr BT pretty good, gets alittle over 3600fps with 40gr/H4895. IMR-3031 is another good powder. Well good luck.
