My girlfriend is looking at these two vehicles, they are basically the same car, and I'm trying to help her do some research.

I'm looking for opinions on all the normal stuff...how do you like it, gas mileage, etc. But, specifically how it handles in the snow/ice.

She's trying to decide if she wants the all wheel drive or front wheel drive. She has a Ford Fusion that's front wheel drive, and for one reason or another it sucks in the snow. We put different tires on it which helped, but I was really suprised that it didn't handle better when it got slick.

Thanks.

Not all front wheel drives are good on slippery or unstable pavement...

A lot of factors get involved...From weight on the suspension to type of wheels/tires on the vehicle....

Last winter, I drove my wife's little HHR (4 cyl, front wheel drive, narrow tires) and almost wound up sliding backwards into a ditch because it didn't have enough suspended weight to maintain traction on a slight incline...My Impala handles totally different, but still not one that I'm totally secure in....

I've driven some of the older Chrysler mini-vans and gone places that would challenge a 4 wheel drive vehicle in the same weight class...

If I were contemplating buying another front wheel driven vehicle that would have to be driven in substandard weather, I would wait until the weather were really miserable before walking into the dealership for a test drive...

We're leaning towards AWD, but I've never had one. The mpg is just a little less FWD vs. AWD. I just wasn't sure about tire wear, handling, etc. Several high end vehicles have offered AWD for a while, so i figured they had it figured out.

Most of the cars I've driven that were FWD were pretty good in the snow, so I was suprised when hers wasn't. I thought the weight over the front tires was a good thing, but I guess the Fusion must be balanced weird, or something else is affecting it.

She's looking to get one within the next couple weeks, so waiting to see for herself doesn't look like that will work.
