Anyone hunted the Powell, Wyoming area?

I'm headed to Powell for a week and a half in January and I'm wondering what the coyote hunting is like around there. I see that there is plenty of BLM in the general area but wanted to get the scoop from someone who's done some hunting in the area. Any input would be appreciated.

I haven't hunted the Powell area, but have hunted north of Gillette for about 3 years now. Powell & Gillette are about 4 hours apart. I hunt PD when I'm there and have seen some coyotes in the distance during the day. When I go in 2024 I do plan on shooting some coyotes as well this time around. I plan on hunting either just before dark or early morning. Where I go it's out in the middle of nowhere and you have to be very careful on the road due to wildlife.

If you shoot a few PD and put them in a bucket and dump them out in a pile where you're going to coyote hunt, it won't be too long when the smell starts getting out to them. PD may be far and few between in January, but they do come out on sunny days.

You can get maps from BLM that will help you plan your trip, I also use BaseMaps.

Thanks for the response. I've never hunted prairie dogs, but it only makes sense that coyotes would be hanging around. Looks like a lot of private land around Gillette owned by oil and mining companies, does a guy need permission to hunt that stuff?

Permission is needed. There are lots of BLM tracks as well as state land that can be hunted without having to obtain permission. Maps & a program like BaseMaps, Hunt Stand, etc is what you need.

When I first started going up there, I used Google Maps with BaseMaps and BLM maps. Paper maps help get you in the right area, Google maps and BaseMaps will let you actually see the ground.
