Anyone in UT Coyote hunt?

Ok, so I live in Riverton, and have decided to try coyote hunting.
Anyone in UT looking to take a tenderfoot out?
Without giving away the "super secret spot", what areas should I be looking at to go out to?

Any other hints or tips would be great.

Thanks

Welcome to the best forum on the web buddy. Lots and lots and lots of Utah callers here. LOL! Stick around here and you'll learn a lot about the fastest growing shooting sport in the U.S. "Hunting the hunter!" Take Care, LawDog

Thanks.
I have not been hunting since I was about 15, now 31.
Looking at maybe heading out either this weekend or the weekend at the end of the month.

Welcome. You're in the right place. You'll get great pointers here. Like Lawdog said its the fastest growing hunt sport. After my first coyote, I'm hooked for good. Can't help you in Utah, but from an Arizona standpoint they are everywhere. Call, Call, Call, and then call somemore.

Just my opinion, don't waste your time going out this weekend. The general season rifle deer hunt opens Sat. and the hills will be crawling with blaze orange and ATV's. Wait for a few weeks and get after them after the deer hunt. Your chances for success over the next ten days will be substantially diminished. LOL!

P.S. kmcintosh78, You have a p.m.

Lawdog

My Advise 1. drive until you don't see any homes, them drive two more hours and you will bee in good coyote hunting. 2. Spend time on google earth or flash earth scooting spots. 3. Learn all you can here on this web site. 4. Have the sun at your back, the wind in your face and try to sit in the shade of a tree. 5. Don't give up!! 6. Only go with someone who really knows how to hunt coyotes.(everyone in Utah claims to know how to hunt coyotes!!) 7. Warning!!! When You call in the first one you will be hooked. Good luck. Some areas to try is south and west of Simpson Springs, south of Vernon, around Old Riverbed Ranch, and around Millford. Many more places are closer but I would get away from the crowds to start.

I grew up in Lehi, lived in Herriman for 4 yrs before moving to the freezer.

Hunted those areas a lot 2001-2003 didn't see another caller

I also didn't see a single coyote in almost 3yrs of calling those area's

I'm sure they are there, I didn't have any luck

last time I was out there 2004, I couldn't get away from the people they were everywhere like fire ants

I hunted up north around cokeville wy. Saw a lot of sign called quite a few in, missed most of them left them for seed.

LOL!!

Did he wirj at HAFB? Is that the one?

I don't think so. He is the father of a friend of mine. He has lived in Lehi for about 8-10 years. Retired Army.

This Utah coyote caller does. Like LawDog said though I dunno if Id waste my time tryin to call this weekend with rifle deer goin on unless you got access to some private where nobody else will be hunting.

How far into winter is to far to go out and try to hunt?
Any areas to maybe try?

Lots of areas, Utah is loaded with blm land. Go north, south, east and west your garunteed coyotes in those areas. Get out and hit the roads look for coyote sign and start calling. Your not going to kill anything sitting on a chair asking where to hunt.

I agree.

Anything I need to do or have with me that I would never think of?
Rifle, non -electric caller and distressed rabbit. Water.
Any state laws or regulations I need to follow?
Lastly, what type of round is ok to use?
I have military surplus FMJs. Will that work?

Thanks

Do not use FMJ ammo. They go through and keep going. They don not make a clean kill. Even coyotes deserve a quick death. Buy some quality ammo.

Yes I am local. For bullets I would recommend something with a varmint bullet. They expand fast and rarely leave a exit hole. What type of rifle are you using? I started with a .270 and just used cheap deer hunting bullets. I shot one coyote two times with the .270 before it died, the first shot went clean through and the coyote didn't even slow down, the second bullet hit bone and nearly ripped the coyote in two. After that I bought and .223 and only use V-max bullets. No regulations on coyotes. The more camo the better. Maybe watch a few youtube videos on what sounds to make. If you hunt in sage brush you might want to sit on something like a small chair of bucket to see over the brush. I use an old milk crate. When I first started I would think that nothing came in. Would stand up and a coyote would be standing with in a 100 yard and then quickly run off when it saw me. I just could not see them siting on the ground the brush would block the view. Also be quiet getting to your stand.
