just purchased a 308 howa/laminate thumbhole stock/24"bull barrel.
at this point im not getting back into reloading so my question is what type of factory ammo is a good starting point to determinr best load for gun? i was thinking of vmax as a starting point. anyone have any personal experience with this rifle?
this is the first howa rifle i have owned, any info on this rifle would be greatly appreciated.

ive never had a howa . but do got a remington 700. the hornady custon ammo is good but a little high price.. i like the remington express core lockts but the ferdal soft points would a good choice too there farly cheap

Are you sure you got a "Bull Barrel"? What I have is considered a heavy barrel .308 Winchester. It shoots the 168 grain Sierra MatchKings into one hole at 100 meters. It has been glass bedded, with Timney trigger, and SVL recoil pad installed. The Sierra Pro-Hunter Bullets 30 Caliber (308 Diameter) 125 Grain Spitzer are also very spectacular on coyotes and jackrabbits, if you don't want the hides.

I've got the exact gun you have. Mine loves the 165 gr. Federal Nosler Accubond and the 180 gr. Nosler Partition. Can shoot a 4 shot group at 100 yds with all holes touching.

its the heavy barrel win. 308, not bull. my hart barrel is the "bull", need a wheelbarrow to drag it out to the field(6mm).

I have a Howa 1500 heavy barrel in 223 that shoots extremely well. For factory ammo the Hornady TAP rounds have shoot pretty well for a friend of mine. Also take a look at the Black Hills ammo. Enjoy your rifle!

have had a Howa for several years in 22/250 and is very accurate with custom loads. never have shot factory in it though. hope it does what you expect out of it.

Hi!
This is the gun I'm looking for! Anybody knows what is the part number, and where can I order from?
Also I found an other one with stainless steel barrel, is it heavy barrel as well?
The number I found : HWR97112

And 1 more question

Any different (except a stock ) between a Thumbhole and Supreme Varminter version ??

I do not have the the 308 in heavy barrel but I do have a 22-250 in a heavy barrel. It shoots as well as Jims does with 37 gr. h380 and 55 gr. sierra blitz. The trigger is so light I just think about pulling it and BOOM. Anywhooo.....they are nice rifles enjoy

Barrel and action same I beleive between the thumbhole and varminter. The stocks differ. The thumbhole is what you see pictured. The varminter has a raised cheekpiece and palm swell at the grip, the forend also has rounded curves.

Chefpierre!
Do you think it worth to pay $100 more for stainless steel barrel?
And my other question is: I bought a Nikon Monarch 5-20 X 44 scope but I have no idea I did it right or no. Is it tactical scope? What is the different between hunting and tactical scope?
I'm sorry for a tons of question , but I don't know anybody to ask opinion.
Please help me out!

I've been shooting a Howa M&P for 15 years. Heavy barrel. I've used 147gr surplus, 150gr hand loads, and 165gr handloads. I have never seen a 1" 100 yard group. All are less. Mine is not a thumbhole.

It all depends on what you want. Would I pay the extra 100 sure. The Nikon Monarch you bought is probably not a tactical scope, but it is one good scope. To be honest it doesnt matter if its a tac scope or not unless thats what you want. Then set a price range. Research within that price range and find what you want.

If it were me and I have thought about doing this. I'd buy the barreled action and put a bell and carlson medalist A2 stock in either 308 or 243. I think you'll get a good firearm with the Howa heavy barrel lineup.
