Anyone Shoot 250 Savage?

I don't mean to highjack at all but if the 250 Savage is the same as the Savage 250-3000, there is a great article about it in this month's Varmint Hunter's mag. Not sure at all if it is the same. Just trying to be helpful.

So do most people not use other brass to size down to this cartridge?

I do believe it is the same actually. From what I understand is the 3,000 came about from the fps.

The 250 Savage, and the 250-3000 Savage is the very same cartridge.

The 250-3000 is the "mother case" for the 22-250...
... but there is no "mother case" for the 250-3000.

While "theoretically" you can make the 250-3000 case from 30-06 or 308, it is such a pain-in-the-azz, that I'm sure you can find better things to do with your time.

yea, 3000 is cuz it was the first american round to break 3000fps. 250 savage is the parent case for the 22 250. and I beleive the 250 savage came from a 30-06 case shortened and necked down.

Well... not really.

The 250-3000 has the same 0.473" head size (a LOT of cartridges do), but the 250-3000 is made from it's own blank strike - when you make it from the 30-06, you get case and neck walls that are way too thick.

I've had a couple over the years, a custom comercial mauser with a Buhmiller(sp?)barrel and a set trigger, a takedown model savage 99, a Savage Model 20 and a couple of years ago I built a little 20" barrelled bolt action for calling out here on the pennisula 75gr X bullets and 117gr RN's. I also built a 25-204 that will match 250 Sav Factory specs and has proven to be a great little deer cartridge. I use Rem and Win factory brass, works just fine. I suppose that you could nech up 22-250 brass in a pinch.

My little carbine.

I use Winchester 250 Savage cases. I've gotten them at Midway, Powder Valley and Grafs at various times.
Shoot them in an early Ruger M77 and a 1953 99R. My son recently picked one built on a Turk mauser.
Great little deer/varmint catridge, one of my favorites.

There's just something romantic about the 'ol .250 Savage and I'm not gonna speak ill of it. As a matter of fact it was near the top of my cartridge list for a combo predator/deer gun I was wanting. But keep in mind a .243 is only .014" inch smaller, has a better bullet selection IMO, is comparable in velocity and recoil (actually the .243 is a little faster), and .243 brass is easy to come by. All this makes the .243 a better choice.

I can spout all I want about those stats but the facts are that "if" I had been able to find a .250 when I was shopping it very well may of come home with me. But I didn't find one and .243's were all over the place. Came home with a .243.

The 250 Sav is almost mystical, you think 243 and your mind goes HoHum but when you think 250 Savage you have visions of shooting Moose and Grizzlies in Canada and Alaska with a Savage 99.

Then there is the fact that it kills way out of proportion to it's size.

It was chamberred in guns that were far ahead of their times, the 99's and Model 20's.

250 savage is my next rifle

Where I live we hunt smallish deer and a short quick handling rifle is hndy plus it will double as a coyote rifle and will be great for the kids to learn on too

Back in the early 60's I had a 98 Mauser chambered up in 250 Savage. It was a wonderful little rifle and took a ton of Coyotes and ground squirrels with it. Bullet selection was limited and I grew tired of it so I had it re barreled to .243. Lately, I've been shooting the 6BR a lot and the first thing I noticed was that the ballistics are very similar to the 250. 87 grain bullet at 3000 FPS and hounded grain bullets at a little less. Bullet selection for the .25 caliber has improved over the years and it should do just about anything you want.

Im on my third one at the moment. I have a Rem 700 classic in 250 at the moment. It is my all time lite cal favorite. My son took his first deer with it last fall. It is one of the best killing calibres Ive ever used. and just fun to shoot......

Man wish I could afford one of those 700 classics in 250. Those classic rifles just handle so well and are easy to carry.

I would love to see big green chamber the model 7. But I may be getting my first savage soon

If you watch gunbroker you can pic up a classic real reasonable. I gave $475 for mine. It had a cheap scope on it and the guy listed it as a normal 700. I put a BC TI stock on mine for coyote hunting and it makes a real lite and is to carry calling rifle. I shoot the 75 Vmax or the 100 Nos BT and its is amazing what it will do to a dog.

Also dont overlook the older tang safe Rugers I had Two of them they both shot real well. Im going to have a 250 Sav AI one of these days, I just keep buying rifles that I cant seem to chop up.
