Anyone shooting the Midsouth 17 cal Varmint Nightmare Extreme bullets?

Hi all,

Does anyone here have any experience with the Midsouth nightmare extreme bullets (20 gr, 17 cal)?

How do they shoot? Are the accurate? Worth the $35/100?

thanks,

I still have a few I bought last year in 34 gr. .204. I sure thought they were cheaper than that when I bought them. If V Maxes are about the same price, and available, Id go with them, They were decent bullets but not on par with V Max. JMO

I have some of the MidwayUSA .17cal, 20gr bullets.

I run them in my .17rem and they're very accurate.

Kills everything I've shot with them. Ghogs, coons, crows...

I've been using them in my .204 with good success on PD's. I may try the 34's on coyotes in TX over Christmas but for my hunting here on prime winter pelts, I will be using a 40 grain Nosler BT. I could get a Mtn Lion as well so I know the 40 will be tough enough.

I have used them for my .17 Remmy. Nope- not quite as accurate as a 20 grain Vmax is, but when you can buy 500 of them for about the same price as 200 of the Vmax it does become more interesting. Honestly, I have not tried too hard to find a really good group with it yet, but part of that reason is that I have quite a few Vmax loads that I am still using.

BTW- my Savage 12 in .204 Ruger has shot its very smallest groups ever with the 34 grain Midsouth bullet. I'm pretty sure that if I tinker with it a bit I can get my .17 to shoot pretty well with them too.

Thanks all,

I have some other more serious calibers for work longer than 150 yards (204's, a 22-250, .223, and .243)

I am actually interested in some cheap and *reasonably* accurate 17 FB loads that I can reload to replace my 17 HMR, which at $15-$17 per 50 and very wind sensitive past 100 yards, isn't the best option these days.

So, I am not necessarily looking for tack driving accuracy - 3/4" groups or so at 100 yards beats my 17 HMR and I can reload it cheaper than my rimfire (~$13/50 if I use the Midsouth bullets)

That's my plan anyhow. If I can shoot a 17 FB at 3800 FPS compared to a non-reloadable rimfire at 2200 FPS with equal or better performance and for less cost........WHY NOT?

Does anyone have a few dozen of these bullets they'd be willing to trade or sell so I don't have to buy 500?

thanks,

Hey Duck, if you'll PM me with your mailing address, I'll be happy to send you some. I've got two unopened boxes of 500 on the shelf down stairs.

They have worked OK for me but there are better. I use them for fire forming 17AH brass with great luck.

Thanks, Claimbuster, that's might generous of you! Is there anything you might be looking for that I could send in return, or, would you at least let me cover the shipping?

I appreciate it, PM coming your way...

I've shot them with pretty good success out of my .17 FB and .17 MK IV. Best groups are about an inch out of the .17 MK IV using H322 powder. And your right, with the MidSouth bullets you can load cheaper than you can buy the .17HMR's and the extra 1200+ fps makes it that much sweeter. I figure that even with 1" groups it's a descent 200 to 250 yard varmint gun. I wouldn't use them on coyotes, but PD's, 'chucks and ground squirrels, no problem.
